 Hi, I've just brought a Canon 400D body and I can't decide what lens to buy. This is my first dslr and I'm fairly new to the subject so any help would be nice :)
I'd like an all round lens that's relatively cheap, <£70 and has a good built quality. Ideally with a focus ring too.

Any help or advice is welcomed strongly, thank you :)

Under £70 (new) there only is one lens to choose from.. 50mm f/1.8 II, the build quality is good (although it can feel a little plasticky), image quality is good, whether it's an all-rounder for you depends what you do.

In general, a lens can:
  • Do everything
  • Do it well
  • Do it cheaply
Pick any TWO.

I don't mind going second hand which I should have mentioned before :bonk:
I'm looking for a lens that can do everything and cheap as I'm just starting with dslr's

Agree with the Nifty 50. What do you like to take pictures of?

I have a 400D and mainly used a 50mm and a Sigma 10-20mm for my shots. I now have progressed to a 5D and mirrored these lenses with a 85mm and a 17-40.

a lens that can do everything

It doesn't exist, at any price.

What you're looking for is a decent all-round lens that will work in most situations then what you need is what's called a standard zoom. These range from £100-£1000+ but what would be called a 'kit lens' is what you're after.

I'm a Nikon person so can't comment on what specific lens to get though but something like a 18-55mm will be the cheapest and you can go up from there.

I enjoy macro shots and landscapes but I'm that new to photography that I'm still not 100% on what I fully enjoy shooting yet.

I'm thinking about going for a used canon 50mm lens but I'll keep looking around for different lenses but thanks for the advice :)

Have you got the kit lens?
