Sometime this year, i'll be selling my 400D & buying a 40D. I'm also hoping to keep on building my range of lenses up, as I progress further.

When I sell my 400D, it'll most probably be being sold as a kit, just how I bought it, with the 18-55mm lens.

I'll also most probably be buying the 40D as body only, which leaves me with a slight problem, I won't have an all-round 'kit' lens for it. I've got my nifty fifty, and my telephoto, the telephoto is out of the question to use as an all-round lens, obviously, and allthough I could use the nifty fifty a lot, I feel 50mm is a bit long for those tricky situations where the 18-55mm kit lens would have been used.

So, my question is, what would be a good, nice & sharp all-round style lens that could be used as a 'kit' lens sort of thing. I'll probably be looking at spending a couple of hundred, and not fussy about buying second hand as long as it's good condition etc.

I was thinking about the Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 macro lens, as it sounds alright and is around my price range.

Would this be a decent kit style lens, or would I be better with something else?

Also open to any other suggestions, reviews, tips etc.

^^ yup agree, nice bokeh, close min focus, fast, useful range, light, good IQ by all accounts. You hardly ever see them second hand, which says a lot. Cheap. I'm trying to find a way of talking myself out of buying one at the moment.
 
The Sigma 17-70 is a good lens upgrade, better focal range than the kit lens and the Tamron, although the Tamron has a constant f2.8 across the focal range, unlike the sigma which doesn't. The sigma has also got a good "quasi" macro function - it's not a true macro but it can focus quite close which is fun.

the tamron is a cracker I'm hopefully buying one to replace my kit lens :)
 
I really like my 18-55mm IS, its much better than the non IS version and only costs £115?
Seems to get good reviews for IQ, but build quality is only that of its predecessor!
