All gear no idea

no gear, all the ideas

As a professional, I've always insisted that if the gear can't pay for itself, pretty damned quickly, then it doesn't get bought... it gets hired instead.

A couple of months ago I came across the website of an American photographer called Ken Rockwell.

He made the point that if you see someone taking photos with all the latest and most expensive equipment then they're like to be an amateur who has a very good job and can afford top price gear. He went on to say that many professional photographers simply don't make enough money to have all the latest kit.

It seemed a fair point to me but I'd like to know what people on here think about his view.

Ken Rockwell seems to get a lot of abuse on forums but personally I find him entertaining, refreshing even, even if is is sometimes very opinionated. So many people seem afraid to express an opinion or show passion and he does both IMVHO. I think that he's often right in what he says... even if he does say it in a somewhat OTT way.

I express my opinions all the time, and get a rough ride for it... so I can empathise with KR to an extent. However.. he spouts inaccurate crap to get ratings. So whatever empathy I have is swamped under a deluge of disregard.

To say that most professionals can't afford good gear is ludicrous. A D800 or a 5D MkIII is a perfectly dependable pro workhorse. If a working professional can't afford to invest £2K in their livelihood, then they're business is on it's arse. Sure.. not everyone can afford a 'blad H4D or IQ180, but if a REAL professional needs one, he'll rent it.

KR is a round appendage usually found on the front of doors, drawers and cupboards.

Handle?

However.. he spouts inaccurate crap to get ratings.

I don't think he spouts inaccurate crap at all. He spouts views, extreme at times and often highly personal but inaccurate? Not that I've noticed.

Lots of magazines and internet sites tailor what they say about products/manufacturers for commercial reasons but I don't think Ken does. What he does do is take things to extremes to generate traffic but I can't remember him being inaccurate or pandering to any particular manufacturer and at least he's a character :D

I thought he (Ken Rockwell) was O.K. until I read that he reckons you should always shoot in JPEG and that there's no point in using RAW. I've taken loads of pictures where the RAW file is definitely better the the corresponding JPEG.

I simply don't understand why he would say that. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?
