speed by allanhowe, on Flickr

A little photoshop in this, took down the saturation on the trees and increased the saturation on the cars. Used an ND x16 filter too.

windmill by allanhowe, on Flickr

Was trying to show it speeding up

Both excellent shots, but for me number two stands out as it captures the theme so well.

Hi, I was just looking at Google images and saw someone had copied your Speed #2 :D. Great colour, motion and composition in this.

For me, though, it's #1. Well composed, pork ceding is spot on as if the amount Of motion blur.

Cheers.

Hi Allan, the car speed shot doesn't really work for me. However, the windmill shot is awesome. Great colours, background and the speed is well captured. Well done, Sir.

Thanks

Hey Allan :)

Plenty - Another for the colour shot, love the low perspective and the towering trees, very effective indeed !!!

Speed - For me it has to be the windmills too, although I really like the first image, good to see a vehicle trail, but I love the colours and the progression of your shots

Agree with DK totally...#2 FTW

I think the first hot would have been better on not quite so long an exposure so you could make out a little more of the cars perhaps.

Like them both although the second one has a little bit more vibrance.

Thanks for looking in

The windmills do indeed seem the image of choice

Thanks, as for the cars it was sort of the point

Speed - number 2 for me also! Technically I can appreciate the work / setup gone into number 1, but I think 2 captures the theme a little better - plus the colours and BG work well too!

It's the cars for me Alan, That's just ACE!

I love the POV here. The streaky cars set on a static scene really make the point.

Great use of shutter speed to streak the cars btw - I've tried mining for data but there's no exif to be had; at a guess a 15th of a second? - care to share so I can try this for myself?

thanks Brian
wasn't aware that the exif data was off on flicker

Exposure 0.6
Aperture f/22.0
Focal Length 18 mm
ISO Speed 100

Hope that helps

Thanks. They must be going slower then they look, I suppose the wide angle helps with that. :)

I will be giving this a go at the weekend. Everyone used to tell me to go and play on the by-pass when I was a kid, now I have good reason :D

another vote for #2 Allan

The bright vivid colours and the progression through the windmill as it speeds up for me works best for the theme.

#1 ticks the box too but when posted beside #2 it is just shaded.

Good work!

Port of liverpool building by allanhowe, on Flickr

Have gone for the more obvious steps. They don't make them like this anymore.
I do realise there is more building than steps but it would have been dull without it

I'm with Brian on Speed. As well thought out and well executed the windmill shot is, I love the car shot. Composition wise, the gentle curve, and the three pretty evenly spaced cars that act like stepping stones through the picture. The way the front car is almost reduced to a smear works really well. The desaturated look maybe comes across as a little cold on my screen, but it's not detriment.

Steps is bang on theme too, and the symmetry is really nice.

Another early submission Allan

I, like Nick like the symmetry to the scene, certainly an impressive and imposing building.
I think though, for the theme I'd have liked a bit more emphasis on the steps.
Not sure quite how you could've managed that whilst maintaining the whole facade of the building though.
Maybe having to sacrifice that for a closer perspective on the steps themselves

Thanks for the comment
I see what you are saying but i tried with just the steps and the doorway and to me it lost its impact, what i was trying to put over was how daunting it must have been at the time for the ordinary person (you have to consider where it is) to go up the steps and enter that building.

Hi Allan :)

Step(s) -I think Iain summed it up for me, wanting more emphasis on the steps, but you have a good reasoning for that sooooo I like the image for it's symmetry, towering composition, and well lit, good to catch it free of people too

Plenty: Wow i LOVE the b&w version.

Speed: Both great shots that show the theme well, think the 2nd one edges it for me.

Steps: I like this and it doesnt bother me theres more buliding as the stsp still play a big part in leading upto the door, to me anyway!

Great detail on Steps shot, I think the comp is quite good (the steps are in there after all), I'm not sure about hoe level it is, the strip of sky at the top looks to be sloped but checked against the top of the screen it is very close if not spot on... maybe its just me! :gag:

Hi Allan...sorry for being so behind with commenting :'(

Plenty....& another vote for the color version....great angle , blue sky & some good detail

Speed....has to be the windmills...( far better than my feeble attempt !) I love the choice of bg color..works really well, you have the whole rainbow of colors . Well laid out with good amounts of increasing speed acroos the 3....top shots mister

Step/s......wonderful building with impressive steps & great symmetry but I do agree with others in wanting more emphasis on the steps , just not sure how you'd have done that & kept the context . Maybe it would have worked as an abstract , just focused on the steps themselves ?

Thanks I do know what you mean its a bit loose as to the subject

it is probably just you Brian:lol:

This was taken the same day as the other one it's quite steppy

Steps by allanhowe, on Flickr

It was my second choice, it didn't work in colour or B+W for me but had another play with it, another crop and reduced saturation/vibrance

speed both work well, but I think the colour and speeding up edge it for the windmills, third could be a tad higher up though I think.
The cars I know have already had the saturation boosted, possibly could go further - I found on my speed that the blur causes a fair bit of the colour to go.

love that big building Allan, the steps put it on theme - but its a top shot anyway, love teh perspective, the detail, the sky...

2nd does have interest in the smooth steps and the texture in the risers - but not a patch on the first for me

Hi, well, I've been back a few times and now to view your Steps. Not an easy one, as has been said, the steps are a tad lost, but overall, I feel it works. I did try a crop but felt the building lost its grandeur.

Nice flag as well.

Cheers.

Hi Allan, sorry I'm slow to the party again. I really like Process no 1; there's not enough visual differentiation in the second one (unless you're a proper guitar player of course; no doubt you'd spot it instantly!). The backgrounds are all fine for me except for the last which is so much darker. I guess if it was clearly the same flower each time (at different dates) it might have more impact, but that's not reaaly feasible with a 52!

Separate comment for each page...

Some really nice ones on p14, Allan.

Rock: the colours are nice, just not quite sure about the composition on that one.

Pair: I thought of this approach, but could never have achieved such a lovely image. Nice colours and for me the negative space to the right really works well.

Shape: very nice and the shadow was a brilliant idea. Well done that man! (WTF is it?)

Plenty: since the forest is basicaly almost mono anyway, the mono version definitely works better for me on that one. Nice idea, too.

Speed: the first with the cars doesn't quite work, needs a different shutter speed I think. The cars are too indistinct. The second one is very clever, and really does show the speed-up. Nice one!

Steps: the first one is pretty good, although the subject is not really the steps, it's the building. All a bit over-symmetrical, too. The second step one is lovely, lots of great texture and that beautifully positioned flower. Ace!

I absolutely love speed - a really well executed shot

I'm not so keen on the steps shots, but architecture isn't my thing, but well done all the same, of the two I prefer the first shot, and you;re right they don't make them like that anymore :)

Number two for me I think - nice to be on theme from two angles (thats my plan btw) and I very much like the DoF and focus point.

I do like the feather, very clean and simple, nice. Perfect even.

But the MONO Jackplug is much easier on the eye and far more interesting to look at in my opinion. Nice one

Thanks for looking in, the focus point had to be on the the tip of the plug so the single ring was visible

Thanks Brian

I am surprised that the two comments so far have gone for the jack plug

Yeah, that's one for me. Cracking detail and well lit. Well composed and I like the subtle detail in the black surface.

Cheers.

#1 gets my vote Allan

Minimalist, clean, sharp, well lit holding the detail in the feather and great use of negative space.

Perfect Allan, just perfect :)
