Alert - how you fasten your rucksack may make it open by itself.......

Yes
I probably like most people did not give it a second thought as to how you close the zips on a camera bag - all the adverts typically show a camera bag / rucksack type with the zips centrally positioned like this:

But the other day after walking a short distance and taking off my rucksack I saw the top compartment was open, at first I thought I must have forgotten to close it, but the same thing happened shortly again.

I then worked out what had happened, as well as my normal compliment of gear in the top compartment, I had that day added two extra flashguns, some batteries and a small lens, so it was totally full and tightly packed in. The bag felt tight across my shoulders and the action of walking had obviously placed more pressure on the centrally placed zips which had then pulled open.

I repositioned the zip fasteners placing them both fully down to the end to one side and all was okay.

Whilst this only occurred as my bag was fuller than normal and the zips under more tension, I will be repositioning the bag zips to avoid this re-occurring or will use a small clip or padlock to secure the zips more securely.

I was lucky that day that nothing fell out.......................

i alway put my zips at the lowest point, mainly for security. i figure its harder for a thief to lift a zip than it is to lower a zip without me noticing the pressure change.

I have seen this happen before and now always close my bag with both zips either bottom left or right.

I've always positioned my main compartment zips both at the lowest point precisely to avoid this happening, but a very good reminder to people:thumbs:

I don't know why the hell anyone would zip a bag like that, unless they did not understand the concept of gravity

Never never zip a bag with stuff in it like that.

If I am somewhere pickpockets might operate (like central London, especially in the tube) I put a little combination lock on the zip.

yep my son warned me not to fasten at top as it was easier for thieves to open

I can only assume it's a fashion thing, as fastening it properly makes the second zipper superfluous.

It means you can choose a side to have it rest on and if one of the zippers fails the other will still close the bag.

I have a Kata 466i (same as the 465i pictured) and zip to the side. If you look at the bottom of both sides of the lower compartment there's a little loopy bit where the zip handles go into which makes it a little more secure and the top zips gets covered under the tensioning straps.

one of my zips failed, so I am forced to this solution. The bag is still fine for now and probably doesn't look as expensive as a camera bag

Had this happen a couple times while on a motorbike, must have opened itself due to the buffeting. Luckily all I managed to lose was some cheap earphones.

Always pull the zip down the side now and never had a problem since.

never thought of it before, but i will now ,amazing what u pick up on the numerous threads

Says a lot about your son and the people he mixes with ;)

Doubt whether gravity would play a part in the zip opening unless you had a weight attached to it, the weight of the zip fastener alone would not overcome the friction between the components, however movement of the bag would have an effect especially if fully packed.

First time pedantic post from me :D

I discovered this carrying home my food shopping in a rucksack. Luckily the beer was safely in the bottom of the bag and I only lost a bag of herbs.

its one of the things i like with the flipside bag i have, sticky hands can get in and nothing can get out if worn properly.
however the tamrac expeidtion 8 i am getting soon might be a different case all together (excuse the pun)

Lowepro flipside means I can carry all my gear in crowds safe in the knowledge someone has to pull the bag off me.
