Hi all,

Ive tried to upload some photos to Alamy but two of then get rejected straight away, the reason is it says uncompressed files must be greater than 24mb? Can anyone explain to me what that means lol???

Thanks

Matt

HI matt You can find an explanation of the required file size on. Alamy site under contributors section.

Thanks, I've also tried uploading files which are slightly larger , let's say 5mb and it still gives the same rejection reason?? I'm guessing it's because the file is uncompressed but I have no idea how I would go about compressing it lol

Hi Matt. Your JPEG is the compressed version. I'm quite surprised they've been rejected at 5MB, as that's about the right size (even according to Alamy).

I've just uploaded 4 files myself, and were all between 4-6MB. They were all checked and approved.

There's an interesting blog entry on the Alamy's own blog, referring to file sizes here (third paragraph)...

You can determin the compretion rate when you convert to Jpeg. If you produce Jpeg in camera you need to set compretion before shooting.

Hmmm ok , thanks for the info , I will have another bash tonight.

In the event a photo is on the small side , say 1.5mb at jpeg, how can I increase this??

Alamy like to be awkward. Rather than just give x by y minimum dimensions they come up with this 24mb uncompressed thing. No one understands it. They should just do image dimensions with a minimum then everyone would know what they were on about.

I've uploaded jpegs from 14mp cameras without issue to Alamy. I would suspect the minimum allowed is probably around 10mp or so.

If it's any help, here's how I resize for Alamy;

1. I always shoot stock in RAW and edit in Photoshop (I use CS4).

2. In photoshop on 'Image' menu, make sure you are in 16 bit colour first of all, and then click 'image size'.

3. In the dialog box make sure all 3 boxes at the bottom are ticked and that 'Bicubic Smoother' is selected.

4. Set the resolution to 300 pixels per inch.

5. Make sure the longest side (height or width) is set to about 5000 pixels. The aim is to get the pixels dimensions figure at the top to 96mb or above, but as close to 96 as you can.

6. Now in the 'Image ' menu again, select 'Mode' and convert to 8 bits. This will halve the file size to about 48mb.

7. Now, save as a JPEG. The main thing is now Alamy can convert it back toa 96mb TIFF for the customer.

Hope this all helps. It works for me.

All done and submitted, Fingers crossed they pass QC

Thanks for all the help

Jack, I think you may need to reveiw your workflow. This was OK for Alamy's days of 48mb min file size. its been reduced to 24mb for a few years now. There should be no need to upsize anymore. Indeed I find myself actually cropping more now, thereby reducing the file size.

Thanks Ian.
As I say, it has worked for me for a while now, but I'll review things.

Well they all failed the QC checks :(, they've only given a reason on one of the photos which was soft/lacking definition.

Oh well I'll try again

Only takes one to fail the lot sadly.
Only initially submit your very best and check and double check the image at 100%.
Once the first lot is passed, the subsequent ones dont get checked as harshly, although Ive still had a couple of failures.

So do they not even check the others? Or can I assume because they only gave one image a reason that said image is the only one that didn't pass QC and therefore the rest failed on that basis, but are otherwise ok?

Thanks

Matt

Nope. They don't check the others. You can't assume they're ok at all.

The more acceptances you get with alamy the easier it gets. I was shattered last week and uploaded a folder of 44 images without checking and was rather shocked when all were accepted lol.

I've done similar and had them pass, but another time uploaded 3-4 that I've carefully checked and had them fail!

It depends on many factors I guess. Who checks them, the time of day, the actual day etc. I imagine last thing on a Friday is easier to get through than 11 am on a Tuesday.
