I was going to upload some images to Alamy (the stock image site), and they say they require uncompressed images of at least 24MB. Now they say to save as jpg high quality setting (quality level at least 10 or above in photoshop), so do they mean the TIFF file should be at least 24MB and then compressed by as saving as JPG? surely they don't mean the JPG should be 24MB.

I know a few people here use Alamy so just thought I would ask how you guys go about it. I am shooting a D3 and D700, and also have some images taken with the D300s, they are all on the Alamy list of suitable cameras so I think I should be fine.

Also are there any other stock sites worth looking at, I had a look at iStock but not sure about it.

thanks

When the file is open in photoshop, look at the bottom left of the screen, this will tell you the uncompressed size. The resultant jpg will be around 4-6MB. Any uncropped images from your cameras will meet the requirements

Alamy have the most ridiculous way of expressing image sizes. Can't they just say x by y pixels or minimum X mp. Would save so much bother. It's almost pythonesque.

LOL
Thanks guys, I thought I was on the right track but they do seem to have a round a bout way if spelling out the requirements.

One more question, they mention no sharpening, but I'm guessing a little capture sharpening in LR is OK if its not overdone?

a little is OK - don't confuse file size with image size - BTW - the requirement used to be 48 meg images - still best to supply that if you can - as you open up more markets for the image.

My TIFFS are over 48 meg so thought that's what they meant, the jpgs seem to come in around 4-8mb depending in content.

So do you pick up many sales on there? I think it was the link to Alamy in your sig that got me looking at it. I thought about uploading to a different stock site a while back and just never went through with it. I'm guessing you just need to keep on adding work and see what happens over time.

jpegs at 4 - 8mb will be FILE size - the image size (uncompressed) as shown in Photoshop will be a lot larger. You must submit jpegs over 24mb - or better still over 48mb to be accepted.

I get sales every month - it varies month on month - not enough to retire on - but it makes a difference - I jhave work with eight different libraries now.

Yes - just keep at it - it is a lot of work - but if you're doing nothing else .. .. .. I try to shoot just for stock on a few days every month. There'll be more new stuff up on Alamy tomorrow :)
