Hi guys and girls,

One of Alamy's requirements is that all submissions are at least 48mb's in size or bigger in .jpg format. Can somebody help me in explaining how you get a 6.1mb .jpg file saved to such a huge file size?

Thanks,..

Dan.

I think I might have read the requirments wrong. JPEGS OR Uncompressed fil sizes,...

Yeah - fairly sure 48mb is a TIF, Dan. Just as God intended to fall out of a 1Ds2. Compression at a factor of 4 gives you a 'normal' jpeg

Do you shoot in JPEG or RAW? I know if I take a RAW file and save it as uncompressed TIF then my 7mb RAW file goes up to about 32MB.

You need to upsize the picture, I normally do in 10% increments until it hits 48Mb.

I've just sussed it, i think. I exported my RAW files to 16 bit tiffs then upsampled them to become 48mb+ file sizes. Then converted them to 8bit and saved as JPEG's. This then saves the as an uncrompressed JPEG resulting in an opened file of 48mb+.

Hate maths,...

I dont think they are 48mb without you upsampling etc in genuine fractals or photoshop so I believe Wile E coyote is right.

You've got it - when you save your jpeg set the compression factor to around 10 which gives you quite a small saved jpeg sitting on your hard drive but 48 mb when opened.

Does this mean RAW files, when opened are quite huge?

The RAW file size remains unaffected from the original camera output.

The complete procedure is...

1. Save the RAW file as a 16 bit Tiff.

2. Interpolate (upsize) the Tiff to the minimum Alamy requirement (48mb) or larger.

3. Save the completed file as a jpeg setting the compression value to about 10. This gives a file size on disk of around 1.5 to 2.5mb (ish) depending on the file and how it compresses.

Hope that helps? :)

bloody doesnt to me!!!!

how is a file bigger opened. that file is whaever it is opened or closed isnt it??

Heads spinning already, and I work on file.......always save as jpegs and Alamy always rejects them.:bang:

LOL. Because when it's saved and sitting on your hard drive Janice, it's compressed. When you open it, that's how big it is when it's uncompressed and using up your computer memory.

It's easy enough to check this by looking at the file sizes of the saved file and the file open in your editor. :)

No because its a jpg and they are compressed.

ie

48mb opened in photoshop so you see all the detail.

when you save as a jpg you compress the data (picture information).
setting the quality from 1-12, 1 is poor, 12 is best. also changes file size as it is compressing / loosing more or less data.

at quality setting 1 your file maybe approx 1mb
at quality setting 12 your file maybe approx 10mb

Its like screwing up a sheet of paper in your hand, the tighter you make the ball of paper the smaller it becomes, but you still have the same sheet of paper, its just if you screw it up as much as you can the quality of that paper when unfolded wont be very good.

I think that makes sense

You've had some rejected then?

Yes mate

just checked and my total stands at

34082 submitted

37 rejected

These are not my personal file totals but include all those I PP and submit for clients.

LOL, I had a couple rejected, but I knew I was pushing me luck when I sent 'em, and I don't send near as many as you. ;)

Cool.

Since they have been using the upload facility they have got very tight on things now, They are implementing

1 image fails all that submission fails,
a few fail everything waiting to be checked fails,
and if they have a complaint from a client they will pull your entire collection of alamy and you will have to resubmit.

Its the cleaning of the images that is the problem apparently, a lot of people arnt doing it correctly.

Dust bunnies will get 'em rejected, certainly.

...and what percentage sell? is it worth all the hassle? Are the returns worth it?

File size when I last submitted. As that the biggest fence to fall down on with Alamy?

What was the file size?

To answer you question I'd say that most are rejected for dust spots as Mark said. You need to open the file at the full 50mb and check it carefully for dust spots. It's a PITA because you need to systematically scroll around a very large file looking for them.

While the file is open at that size look at it very critically and ask yourself if it's sharp or capable of being sharpened. (Alamy say no sharpening allowed). Also look for interpolation artifacts due to upsizing, they're not difficult to spot. Those are the things most likely to get rejections I reckon.

Cheers CT, I'll give it a try.
