The previous Airscene calendar competition was a success again, with the number of shortlisted entries rising to 87 (from around 200 received). This year I am hoping to achieve more than 100 shortlisted entries, and for this reason the competition is starting early.

So, the Airscene 2010 Calendar Competition is now open, and our first sponsor is on board already. Anne Millbrooke has kindly offered another copy of Aviation History, and Abbreviations, Acronyms and Alpabets of Aviation to this years competition.

I am already in talks with several other sponsors and expect to make more prize announcements over the coming months. I am working hard this year on making prizes available to all 12 winning entries, with more availabilty to non UK winners too, and I am hopeful of pulling it off.

The rules are the same as in previous years, with the addition of a “too similar” rule (rule 2). I would like to wish you all the very best of luck and look forward to receiving your entries.

When will entries be on the site?

The Airscene 2010 Airshow Calendar Competition prize pot is beginning to grow as Key Publishing Ltd sponsor the competition for the fourth year in succession.

In order to make more prizes available to overseas entrants Key Publishing have agreed an increase in their offering this year to include p&p in the prize offers.

The prize table is currently as follows:

1st prize £150 to spend on books/dvd's/magazines/software etc on Key Publishing (incl p&p)

2nd prize £100 to spend on books/dvd's/magazines/software etc on Key Publishing (incl p&p)

3rd prize £50 to spend on books/dvd's/magazines/software etc on Key Publishing (incl p&p)

To see what Key Publishing have to offer check out www.keypublishing.com

We still have the two book offers from aviation author Anne Millbrooke, but have not decided where these will go in the prize list yet. As usual the prize list is expected to change and grow over the coming months, and announcements will be made as prizes are confirmed.

I look forward to receiving your entries.

No sorry - the rules clearly state that entries must be of aircraft and must have been taken at an airshow. Each entrant is allowed to submit a maximum of 2 entries, to be evaluated for shortlisting. At least one entry must have been taken at an airshow in 2009, the other may have been taken in 2008. All entries must be declared as being the work of the entrant and should not have appeared anywhere else on Airscene (competitions or forums).

Does an Air Display at an event count ?

While not categorically stated, entries taken at a publicised event which details a scheduled air display (although not flypasts) are accepted under the current competition rules.

I hope this helps.

Ian

Thanks very much Ian.

Well, my entries are in, that was tricky - I hope I picked the right ones!

Just over 2 weeks remaining before I let the judges free to select the best 12 entries from this years shortlist.

From those already shortlisted I can pick 3 or 4 which I think stand a good chance of making it onto the calendar... but I still have a handful to go through and I expect more to arrive over the coming weeks.

If you think you could be one of the 12 which the judges deem to be the best then get your entry in ASAP.

Good Luck,

Ian

I got two in... I doubt I'll win but it's always worth a shot ;)

Hi John,

firstly - thankyou for taking part...

One thing I have always tried to do with this competition is make it fun and fair for everyone.

As you are aware there is 2 rounds of judging ... firstly the shortlisting - this is carried out by myself.

At close of the competition, judging is handed over to a panel of judges, and this is where it gets interesting. Last year for example the panel was made up of Aviation author Anne Millbrooke, Sgt Bowmar from RAF music services, Lorraine Anderton from BA flying school and Martin Steele from Key Publishing Ltd (UK's largest aviation publisher).

In addition to the 4 judges (sponsors) listed above, my father and a family friend (who both purchase a lot of aviation prints) and my better half also takes part in the judging. By doing this the field is "levelled" and everyone gets a shot a a prize - take a look at previous calendars to see the variety of winning entries.

I entered this year - one shortlisted and one not. Good selection of entries is critical, I was kicking myself over my second choice (the one not shortlisted) as I had some more conventional shots that I think I should have entered in preference.

Hindsight = wonderful.

BTW - this is not a complaint, just a tip for future entrants.

Thanks for all the detailed information Ian. I like the sounds of the judging and will look forward to seeing the results. I had another look through the other calendars and there is a good range of different sorts of images.

I've had a punt. Not holding out much hope though!! Escpecially as one of the photos I submitted had terrible artefacts in it, that I didn't notice until I hit the send button!!

Had a go, never done this air stuff before! My best picture is in vertical format so can't enter!

Don't worry - I received the version without the artefacts in before your entry was posted.

In case anyone is interested:

This years calendar competition is closed, however there is still an opportunity to win a prize if you think you are up to the job of judging...

Taking part does require an Airscene Mailing list ID (you can get one by emailing me at the address provided on the Airscene forums). If you dont wish to remain on the mailing list after the competition - just ask and you will be removed.

This additional competition is open until midnight on 18th October, and requires you to choose your top 12 from the 77 shortlisted entries. The person most closely matching the final results from the judges will be deemed to be the winner. Full details on the Airscene forums under the heading "Airscene 2010 Calendar Competition"

The prizes being offered include 1 years free advertising on any Uradnet banner network + 1 years free advertising on Airscene - so may suit anyone with a website of their own to promote. In addition anyone who sells aviation prints will also get a years showcase on Airscene.

As no calendar competition winner is allowed to win more than one prize, if any entrant does make it onto the calendar twice then their may also be a thumbdrive left over to add to the prize pot for this competition.

Wow, can't believe it, had a notification earlier I won this competition! Well chuffed, and have to say I was in awe of half a dozen or so entries plus some really nioce shots and aircraft in there. I know everyone will have differing opinions on the results but great to have a competition that can be won by the average guy. Many thanks Ian.

Well done Mate.
Also, well done to Ian and all at Airscene, for another great competition.
Thanks to the judges who, once again this year, had a tough job.
Well done to all that ended up in the 2010 calendar.
Dean:)

Thanks, there were some great images and I never expected a win, nice picture that.

This years calendar competition is now over and I would like to congratulate all of the winners, particularly Stuart Brown for his winning entry...

Making it onto this years calendar was quite an achievement; if you followed the judging and saw the results as they came in the choices were quite varied, and really anyone could have won.

Special mention also goes to Dean Feltimo; who appears on the Airscene calendar for the 3rd consecutive year.

Well done to all the winners, and if anyone is interested, the calendar is FREE to download and will be available from the following link from next weekend:

Can I say what a great competition, only got the one entry in this year and after 1st and 6th in 2008 am pleased to have got 12th place this year. Thanks to Ian for a great competition and big congrats to Stuart for a cracking photo and a worthy winner. Gotta up my game next year judging by the great standard seen this year

Congratz to all the winners, especially Blackcloud. I was nowhere, although I did get some points for both my entries.

It certainly was a worthy winner.

Many thanks for the support guys, greatly appreciated and as I said, complete suprise for me. I worked in the United Arab Emirates for a couple of years and first visited the Al Ain Air Show in 2007 and returned again to enjoy it after annually. Great little venue, the desert setting and everything just seems so much more personal than many larger Uk events...and it's short sleeves in January too! They have some great flying teams too, and individuals including the late but great Jim LeRoy. The shot which is obviously reduced in size on the website, was shot on a Nikon D200 with 70-300mm VR. It was mid afternoon and the light over the desert was lovely. The gorgeous Guinot girls who are the wing walkers and planes parked right under where I was sitting.

This was my 3rd year having a place in the calendar, so im well chuffed. Especially as the level of comp was great this year.
Dean:)
