It's back again...

The competition for the Airscene 2009 calendar opens on the 1st April 2008, and Key Publishing Limited are providing £250 worth of aviation book prizes for the 3rd year in a row.

Other prizes are currently in the pipeline, and it is expected that there will again be 3 top prize places and a further 3 runners up places. The top 12 entries will all appear on the FREE Airscene calendar.

British Airways Flying Club have generously donated a Trial Flying Lesson at Wycombe Air Park courtesy of British Airways Flying Club to add to our 1st place prize pot. (This prize is valued at £84 and will be valid for 6 months from date of issue - This prize will be offered to 2nd, then 3rd place etc, if the 1st place winner is unable to accept).

This competition opens in less than a week, and is set to be our biggest calendar competition to date.

Anne Millbrooke has offered an autographed copy of her book "Aviation History" AND a copy of her new book "Abbreviations, Acronyms, and Alphabets of
Aviation." (due out in late Summer) to our prize pot.

Full details of the prize pot will be posted on the website as more prizes come in.
 
The Airscene 2009 calendar competition is now open.

The best 12 entries (as voted on by judges) at the end of the competition will all appear on the FREE 2009 Airscene Calendar, with 3 main prizes and 3 runners up prizes.

Each entrant is allowed to submit 2 entries - one of which must have been taken at an airshow in 2008, the other may have been taken as far back as January 2007.

Entries will be evaluated for shortlisting and all succesfully shortlisted entries will appear on the competition page, and voted on by our panel of 6 judges during the first week of October.

You may be interested to know that DSLR User magazine are planning to cover airshow photography in their June edition.

I made comment on their forum about the Airscene competition, so hopefully they'll mention it in the article.
 
Thanks for that, every bit of publicity helps, and hopefully it will draw in more people with an interest in aviation photography.

Like many other aviation enthusiasts I was disappointed that there was no-one running competitions for my particular hobby, so I have now spent the last 5 years building it up and getting regular sponsors, so that no-one else needs to feel disappointed.

Last year I had around 180 entrants submit a total of over 230 images, of which only 72 were shortlisted. I am hoping that this year will break 100 shortlisted entries, only then will I be able to justify asking for an increase in prize sponsorship, and make everyone even happier still.

The Airshow seaons has finally got under way and I am now receiving the first trickle of entries to this years competition and so far only 1 entry has made the shortlist. Can you do any better?

Next weekend see's one of Europe's largest free airshows take off at Southend, with RAF Cosford and Biggin Hill following close behind during the first half of June - so plenty of opportunity to get out those long lenses and enter this years competition.

With 6 prize positions, and currently around £300 of prizes going to the overall winner, including £125 of aviation books courtesy of Key Publishing Ltd and a free flying lesson courtesy of British Airways Flying Club; competition will be tough.

The top 12 entries will all appear on the free 2009 Airscene calendar, giving those featured an avenue to publicise their work. Each entrant is permitted to submit 2 entries - entries taken before 2007 will not be accepted, and one entry MUST be taken at an Airshow or flying display in 2008.

Hi all,

Had a nice little surprise package arrive yesterday... The RAF Museum sent 3 copies of the new book "Breaching The German Dams" to add to this years calendar competition prize pot, along with a review copy for myself.

The book take a detailed look at the Dambusters raid and dispels some innacurate assumptions about this raid whilst uncovering a few little secrets along the way.

The book is available exclusively through the RAF museum.

The prizes for first place in this years competition now stands at:

Less than 4 weeks remaining for this competition, so if you havent got your entries in yet, then you had better get your fingers out.

Dont forget that you may submit 2 entries for shortlisting, entries must have been taken at an airshow, one must be from an airshow in 2008 and the other may be from either 2007 or 2008.

Pay special attention to the format (e.g. 1000 * 500 pixels landscape format) and file size = no larger than 1MB but try to keep to a minimum of 250kb.

The rules ask for entries taken at either Airshow or Flying displays - so for example - the Red Arrows performing a display routine at Navy Days would be allowed, whilst a flypast over Buckingham Palace would not. I apologise if the rules were not clear on this, and also that I have only just got here to read your question, as I fear you dont have long to enter now.

The final results are now in and congratulations one winning 1st prize goes to Steve Price from Sheffield with the following entry:

Simon Marston missed getting on the calendar last year after a tie with Gergely Grosz, but has made a worthy jump to 2nd place this year, which I am sure he will be happy with.

Ian Schofield and Dean Feltimo have both managed to make an appearance on the Airscene calendar for the second year in a row, and incidentally tied with 24 points apiece for 3rd runner up, in this case I have had to make a decision which entry would receive a prize.

Finally, Jon Irwin is the only entrant this year, who managed to get both of his entries onto the calendar, although did narrowly miss out on getting a prize.

Im well pleased to be on the calendar for the second year running. The quality of the entries this year was excellent. I dont envy the judges at all. And a good mix of shots to finish with.
Congrats to all that got shortlisted, a few of which are on this forum, and well done to all those that are appearing on the calendar.

So many TP togs winning my prizes?

I think that only shows the quality of TP togs - as I am pretty certain that not all entrants were from TP.

The overall number of entrants was up again this year, and quite a few lost out on being shortlisted simply because they submitted an almost duplicate image to one already shortlisted.

The number of overseas entries was down however, and I am trying to address this for next years competition. I will be aiming to provide prizes for every entry to make it onto the calendar, and asking sponsors to not limit prizes to just the UK.

In particular I am trying to get together a package with an overseas Airshow - I wont say any more than that, cos at the moment it is a long shot and I really have to put my negotiation skills to the test.
