I'm off to Australia (emmigrating) very soon. I'll be taking my D200, 3 lenses flash etc as hand luggage and my laptop. Has anyone got any advice for me?

I understand they are pretty hot on hand luggage now in the cabin, any recent long haul travellers care to share their experiences?

I'm flying from manchester via singapore airlines.
 
You'll be ok as long as the bag isnt too big.

We flew to Vancouver before Christmas and the only thing they were worried about was the baby food. Made us open all the pots and 3 hours later it all went off as it needs refigerating after being opened, the flight was 10 hours. Thankfully Air Canada supplied us with some baby food.

The bit I prefer to forget is being told to calm down by the police who had H&K MP5-A5 automatic sub machine guns on them after telling the guy who made us to taste the food to go and make love to himself.

Not something to be proud of but it really ticks me off when they know perfectly well the food is for a baby. Common sense on par with a dodo.

I think they were getting you to taste it to prove it wasn't anything nasty...

Still, as far as the camera kit goes, I'd never trust anything like that in the hold, and certainly not laptops either.

So going back to taking your camera gear onto a plane as hand baggage is the general rule as long as the bag its in is the right size you'll be ok? I ask as I was going to get one of those bomb-proof jobs by Pelican or Storm to put my stuff in when flying? Finally is there a weight issue as my kit weighs quite a bit (if I took it all - & I'd like to!)

I take all my gear in the Lowepro Slingshot 200 AW ... weighs quite a hefty bit but as long as you don't make a big thing about it the size is what really matters to airport staff ... never been checked or quizzed in loadsa flights since I got it ... :D

BTB ... Jill has to take the Longer telephoto separately in her cabin bag but that's all ... :D

Hi Evey.

I have done a few trips to the states recently,from Manchester, complete with camera kit bag. There's basically 3 rules you need to follow ...

1. Make sure your bag is the right size and you haven't got too many bags (normally 1 for hand luggage).

2. Weight wise - no problem as long as it's not madly heavy. As long as you can lift it into the overhead locker it's classed as fine.

3. Liquids - still varying from flight to flight - but as a general rule avoid any bottles of lens cleaner etc.

Alternatively, as you mentioned you're heading to Oz, appoint me as your caddy! I will carry all your bags for you and have your camera ready (complete with the correct lens and exposure settings) whenever you want!!

I was taking an inflatable bed to Spain as hand luggage (the kind you plug into the mains to inflate) as I didn't want to chance it being punctured. Got all the way to the x-ray machines and was asked to open the box, which I did. Was then asked to go back and check it into the planes hold as there was a chance it could inflate on the plane. Despite arguing that I would need to plug it in to inflate it the guy insisted I go back. The bed was brand new and has anyone tried to get one of these things back in the box once opened. Airport security seem to be very wary of anything electrical being taken onto the planes nowadays, which I suppose is understandable.
 
does anyone know the specific hand luggage bag dimensions,i am going up to scotland early next month and will be taking my camera gear, i may also take my laptop(if i can get a decent bag to carry all the kit by then) but will definately be taking the camera plus a couple of lens's if anyone knows the specific bag dimensions it may be helpful,thanks in advance :thumbs:
 
It varies from airline to airline.

Check your airline for their dimensions.

As a general rule .. it's 'supposed' to be 56cm x 45cm x 25cm. But this changes depending on who you're with and how observant they are ;)

Could always stick a lens or two in some pockets*. Not hand luggage then :D

*Might not work.
 
trench coat, a vest/waist-belt lens holder...
that wont look at all suspicious!
 
I don't see what difference it makes. Surely a bomb can still go off in the hold?
 
Just came back this week from a trip abroad with roughly that amount of kit in a Lowepro rucksack (rover), the advice given so far is very accurate having travelled with different airlines recently, they do have different dimensions for bags in the cabin areas.

Also as already stated, the container containing the liquids must be a max size of 100ml, so you cannot get away with a nearly empty 125ml container!

Hi Evey, I am new to the forum. I went to Sydney in Sept last year and flew Virgin. This was when there were the restrictions. I managed to take a 5D a 24-70 L and a 70-200 is L an ex580 and my laptop and stay within the guidelines. This weekend just gone I went to Dubai and they didnt look twice at my computreker rucksac and it had quite a bit more than that in it.
 
basically dont take any fluids with you, camera gear is fine, you'll need to take your laptop out at the xray machines and also tell them you've got camera gear and if they want that removed from the bag as well you'll be more than happy to do that.
some airlines are picky about weight, but just take your laptop out of the bag for check-in and thats generally ok, my bag was 10kg when i flew to the canada last year, and dispite being told i would have to carry my laptop and books seperate from my rucsac it wasnt a problem once i left the checkin desk
