I could do with a proper wifi router. I mostly have apple stuff so the extreme seems logical. The asus does more and is all singing and dancing but I want something I can plug in and not have to mess with a lot. Having had issues with netgear in the past not working with apple stuff (mainly macbook) I'm wary of third party alternatives now. I have suffered the SH2 as it is free but it does have a few major weaknesses.
I do need to add custom dns servers as VM's ones are a load of arse biscuits. With the SH I've had to configure custom ones into clients rather than on the router and this isn't always possible so when they go tit's lots of things stop working and it is annoying.
I'll be using the SH2 in modem mode and using the extreme for dhcp and all other routing activity.
Express only has one LAN port so I've ruled that out.
Also do both allow you to reserve IPs? That's also essential.
I did look at the TP link as their gigabit switches have been really good but there seem to be issues with apple compatibility so they're out.
The D-link cylinder DIR-818LW looks visually interesting like the extreme. The old VM supplied D-link router I had was very reliable. UI was crap but it generally worked without needing much attention at all. It's also basically half the price of the apple one. I think it's between those two but I have no idea which one is going to be the best long term one.
Anyone tried both?
