Just wondered if anyone here does Aitfix, im 21 but love it, just finished the Titanic and QE2 and im about to order the U-Boat!

Anyone else into it :D
 
I have a Tamiya Fairey Swordfish that's been waiting five years for me to get round to it...
 
Used to build loads of WW2 planes and hang them from the bedroom ceiling- kids don't seem interested any more.

Occassionally dable in building model cars, prefer the Tamiya models, especially the 1/12 Formula 1 cars
 
I have couple of Gundam models to build, opened 1 box and found the instructions in Japanese! My son won't be pleased if I done it wrong!

I did that in various dogfights using fishing line. My son is 4 so plan to get some soon and do with him.
 
I used to do model cars - DTM, F1, touring cars, general nutter mobiles like Cusco Imprezzas (etc) - but haven't done them for years. I've got a Ferrari F1 car (2000) kit that's been sitting in the cupboard for years and I've been threatening to make it but as of yet, it's still in the box :)
 
I go in fits and starts. When I lived in Bovington I had the Tank Museum a 5 minute walk from my house, and they did an absolutely mahousive selection of Airfix kits. When I first moved there I lived in a barrack room, had no TV and sod all to do, so I did a lot of Airfix...now not so much, although I wish I had the time to do more.

Did that as a kid myself. One night, the entire collection of 2 x spitfires, 2 x hurricanes, Mosquito, 2 x Heinkel he-111's and a Halifax decided to come into "land" at once. It scared the be-jesus out of me!!!

The missus bought me a Spitfire kit 2 years ago.....it's still sitting in the drawer. Must get around to building it one day.
 
I'm hoping my 14 month old will want to build this sort of thing when he's older. He probably won't though, he's already pinching his dad's PS-whatever controller.

Mek-Pak.. something I didn't discover until years after my plastic kit building phase. Far better than the old tubes of polystyrene cement or trying to use superglue.

Like Alan, I still occasionally build models but not Airfix. Although I do have a similar type of kit stashed away for a winter project kit-bash some time.
 
Aah the memories of a small bedroom infused with the smell of cement glue and enamel paint;never needed to go off the rails 'sniffing glue',must have been imune to it by the time I was 15.
I have a part finished Tamiya kit of a Yamaha TZ250 gp bike that I've had since the 90's and a old Matchbox kit of Barry Sheenes' Suzuki.
 
I built a few when I was growing up, but that was quite a long time ago! Bought a fairly large scale tank model that could be motorised and fitted with radio control when my son was about 10 or 12, but it's still in the box. Never got round to building it.

One thing I do remember were the US kits that mentioned the wide range of parts and accessories you could buy to customise the model, all 'available from your local dealer' who, of course, had never heard of anything like that.
 
What a great hobby, something which many children now will never appreciate, because much of what they do is "virtual", not "actual". I started off with Airfix and Revell (first ever kit was a Revell P51d Mustang in 1/72 scale), and gradually got into more complex kits with extra detailing - dioramas and the like. Did the whole planes from the ceiling bit (they used to fall off and/or gather lots of dust), but then started making Tamiya F1 cars in the smaller scale (1/20 or 1/24 I think), and used to spray them with an airbrush using 2 pack car paint.
Maybe you guys could post a few shots of them - if they have survived.

He will. My son was using my iPhone from that age, and is well up to speed on games on the iPad at 4. However he does like older traditional stuff too like snakes and ladders and will be doing these too.
 
I used to do it as a kid and then got back into the hobby about 10 years ago when I was recovering from an illness. Wasn't too keen on Airfix kits though, they seemed to using the same moulds they used in the 50s and 60s and it showed. It took a lot of work to get some of the parts to fix.

I made quite a few Tamiya kits which were lovely and then a few by a company called Accurate Miniatures which had amazing detail.

Sadly most of the models were wrecked during a house move. I'd left them at my mums and she decided that packing them in bubble wrap and polystyrene pellets was a bit too much so she stuffed them into plastic carrier bags along with books, CD, shoes etc.

Needless to say I was not a happy bunny.

Holy thread revival :)

I don't think I saw this before. He's now 18 months and an expert at playing music on the iPad. Can't get right into it as it's got a pass code. Still holding out some hope that he'll play with airfix.
 
I got a load of models and paints from the missus for Christmas, just need to set some time aside to get building.
 
I used to do F1 cars - got one sat on the shelf that I was given a few years back but haven't gotten round to making.
 
Haven't done this for ages, and don't know if I'll ever get round to building the tank I bought about 20 years ago (previous post in this thread) when my son was a kid! Maybe, it's never been opened so it will be fine.

How much trouble do people go to with these models? I remember reading magazine articles on building WW2 aircraft models and people would go to extraordinary lengths to research and match paint colours to the originals - correct to the model, year and theatre of operation - and replicate the discolouration caused by the exhausts and guns etc. I also remember articles explaining why a particular kit wasn't absolutely accurate and how to fix this by customising parts.
