Hi all, just after some advice as the North America Airshow is on in a few weeks near me in Toronto so planning on getting down there with the camera.

I only have a Pansonic Lumix FZ18 so not expecting to get any shots to blow you away, but it would be nice to get some fairly decent ones.

Im after suggestions on whats the best settings to shoot these on? Im hoping to have adequate zoom (x18, 28-504mm equiv) so then I suppose its down to me and the cameras limits.

Hello Mate,
Probably best to try to shoot shutter priority, 1/500th - 1/1000th sec for jets, and 1/125th - 1/250 for props. Set exposure compensation to +1/3 - 2/3stop. Continuous AF and track the plane. Im not sure what settings your camera has, but stick roughly to these settings and you should be fine.
Look forward to seeing some shots.
Dean:)

well its this weekend so going to try my best as it my 1st time at shooting planes. Fingers crossed Ill get a few good ones :)

some plane shots can be for the design and detail of the construction and engine
close ups of plane parts are just as interesting as moving shots
especially in the cockpit

will see how it goes, as theres no static show, its all over lake ontario

unfortunate

i think you have all the info you need on moving

pan of course and keep ahead of the subject, follow through and dont fill the frame too much

I'll bear these settings in mind. I've just realised that we have the "Victory Show" right near where we live this weekend so I'll probably go down and try and get some shots. Got the Vulcan, Red Arrows, Spitfire, Lancaster, Hurricane, Mustangs x2 and B17 coming overhead so let's hope it stays dry/clear!

Also doing my first show tomorrow at Northern Ireland international show - Red arrows etc. A bit nervous and not sure what to expect. Think I'm fairly well equipped with lenses. Good luck - post some. I will if I get any decent ones:clap::clap::help:

Ploughing through the hundreds of shots from today, I'll put a thread up later no doubt, but here's one that I'm pretty pleased with:

Well I wasnt really pleased with any I got. mycamera and the weather was against me thats for sure.

Just couldnt get close enough, to pass over to the island you needed some fancy VIP tickets and I found I actually got some of my 'not so bad' shots from my balcony as alot of the planes looped by my apartment.

Anyhow, too much sun, way too bright, Now realised I really need to step up to DSLR now and also need to get closer in future.

Ill bob a thread up in a minute

ul mate
I have fairly good kit and I found aircraft photography hard, especially not being used to it.

spot metering or full manual mode is the way to go. against a bright sky you're stuffed sometimes. also the contrast style focusing of a bridge camera is often just too slow for this purpose.

not bad at all , i would ease the crop on the left side slightly though :)

Thanks Paul. That's the SOOC view, nearly clipped the wing! Here's an edited version I did with some extra sky added to ease the framing:
