Morning all & thanks for reading

Off to Portugal in a couple of weeks & wondering how to get my kit there. What size bags are now allowed on aircraft especially Monarch & how do you get your slrs to the destination in one piece???

The Monarch paperwork says you can use a bag approx 15" x 12" x 4" deep. How do you egt your kit in that?

Oh my God the pressure- I can't cope!!!!

Seriuosly any help & advice greatfully accepted

Depends on the airline if they'll allow you to go over the recommended size: I phoned Ryanair before flying to Sweden at the height of the terror alert and they were fine. Allowed me to hand-carry my cameras and laptop aboard as cabin luggage and even walked me through to the front of the queue to get it all checked out by customs.
Phone customer services and ask - can't hurt.

Again it was Ryanair, but i packed 2 bodies and a range of lenses into a lowepro Nova (think it's a 5??) AW. 24-105, 70 -200, 12-24 and 430ex, 30d and 5d.

plus the wacky liquids restrictions.

im still trying to work out those rules, you must put any liquids and gels inside a clear plastic bag to go through scanners..... is there something about the protective abilities of clear plastic bags that they are not telling us, are they bomb proof?

they seem to have returned to normal with the rules, you'll probably get more scrutiny with the new rules but you shouldnt have a problem,

The plastic bag or "freedom baggie" as our cousins across the pond like to call it is crazy. You're allowed a 1 litre bag (must be ziplocked or sealed in some way) containing liquids etc. The bag has to be clear so that the security guys can check that the contents are OK and that each container is less than 100ml. This is because, as we all know, a 200ml tube of toothpaste with 2 squeezes left in it is a deadly weapon whereas an unopened 100ml one is safer than a fluffy kitten :cuckoo:

All I can say is I'm glad I'm not travelling as much these days. I used to fly down to Nottingham every week before all this erupted, with an allowance of 1 bag plus a laptop I could travel for a week with just hand luggage. I was usually out of the terminal and in the car on my way either to work or back home before the hold luggage hit the reclaim belt. Now I either have to put my laptop in my hand baggage which means I don't have a laptop bag at the other end or I have to check a bag which is a complete pain.

We took someone to Manchester Airport on Sunday and they had two women at the end of the corridor well before you even get to security checking what people had. They also had one of those metal boxes to measure your hand baggage size. If the bag didn't fit in the box it was too big. They also had a huge supply of "Freedom Baggies" just in-case you forgot to bring one.

I was at Stanstead last night collecting a hire car and noticed at that point that RyanAir had their old metal cages for the "if it'll fit in here it's fine" checks in operation again. mentally clocked the fact that a mini trekker AW is fine again then! :)

Thanks guys-complicated innit. The Monarch website says that you can now take a normal handbaggage size bag on as hand luggage as per RPSTEWARTs post
