A girl i used to know at school has asked me to do some portfolio shots for her than she can show to employers etc (shes into the entertainment kind of things on cruise ships etc).

the only thing she has said is some head shots/full body shots but i really have no idea what kind of shots people use for portfolio stuff like this so just after a few ideas/few links to the type of photo's you lot think would suit.

She said she would hopefully send me some links at some point to stuff she wants but thought i might aswell ask the pro's on here while im at it.

Edit: shoot will be outdoors prodominantly as i have no studio, and it will be after i finish work on friday so be around 5/5.30pm so going to be getting dark i imagine.

Thanks in advance
Matt

Do you have a flashgun?

don't do it that's my advice

well THATS helpful isnt it :cuckoo::shake:

Matt, i wouldnt do them in the dark, try in the afternoon at the weekend so you get some nice golden winter sun behind you.
Search the net for the type of shots, look through mags etc.

Good luck and let us know how you get on

There are plenty of pictures on the forum that will help you:thumbs:

take the pressure off by not bigging it up too much.

Then expriment

try to start an hour earlier if poss to get some natural light setting sun shots as they are lush

then either drag the shutter to bring in some ambient (maybe a tripod below 1/30) or work at sync to lose the bg to black

a seperation light is massively important here, so 1 flash in front and to the side (maybe a reflector other side for fill) and one behind to push her from the bg

if she's working without a coat on for the shots get her to keep it on for all the set ups then off for the shot and back on (it gets chilly in the evenings)

get the standard stuff done first then go nuts and do the funky stuff, think wide angle from down low to elongate legs (not if wearing skirt :D) and weird poses.

do dumb stuff to ease her nerves, try any pose first to show her if it aint right (also makes her laugh which is good)

grab an assistant if pos as they're just handy

thats just a regurgitation of all the handy things I've picked up from similar shoots recently. If I come up with anything else I'll let you know :D

oh and know your kit inside out as you will forget to think of the simple stuff so it should be autopilot (like say max sync speed)

Cheers for all that :) i cant really do day shots otherwise i would aim for the day bit h
shes only around for 2 weeks then away on a ship for 6months and im busy at the weekend with another shoot which is even scarier for me (glamour).

Thanks for the advice though :) much appreciated

Find images you like in magazine, good headshot, look at some websites and find poses you think work.

Try your lighting with a friend as a model if poss, if not, a mop, a dummy, anything to represent a person and get the lighting how you like it. When done, sketch your lighting setup and note down everything inc shutter speed aperture etc. These will form your go to sots, and will be easy to setup from your diagrams without much need for tinkering (save the odd flash stand move or 2)

You will then have a go to set of shots for a start, which you will be more confident in. From there, you will both hopefully relax a little and then just experiment. You will have your baner shots from practice, and then experiment. Also ask her to email the type of shot she likes, and again maybe get one of them practiced up before you shoot, so you know she will have one she likes.

Hope that helps a little.

get her at her best...not to early in the day.. and not over glam

keep the lighting softish and try to capture a friendly look and relaxed...

as if you had a problem and she is the one who looks as if she can fix it..
