I got a Canon 20D a little while ago second hand, now before this i had a Nikon D50 and all the pics to me were good, but i have been struggling with the 20D. Is there anyone locally to me (Headley, GU35) with a 20D i could come and compare pics with.

I'm hoping it is just me not being used to the camera and the settings.

Just the quality of the pics, i was using a 18-55 & 70-300 G on the D50 and most of the pics were good. Some of the duck pics i took were really good and crisp.

I haven't been able to get the same sort of pics on the 20D. I have a 18-55 & 70-300 APO DG Macro Sigma lens on it. On the Nikon i could have Raw on permanent regardless of if i was shooting in Creative or Program modes, but on the Canon i can only use Raw in Creative modes.

I am sure it is just me not being use to having to manually set the camera to use Raw. I just wanted someone to take a picture using theres, then the same pic using mine to compare them.
 
I put up a couple of my RAWs from the 20D in this thread >Link< You are welcome to download them to have a look at.

Yousendit is free so you could upload a couple of your RAWs (you are using RAW?) for others to have a go at processing.
 
ah right, yeah the 20D cant write raw unless its in creative modes. The others use JPG only.

Do you have any examples of the pics you have taken with the 20D ?

Matty has the 70-300 Sigma i think, i know he had issues with sof areas of the lens, but found sweet spots on it ! Hopefully he will poke his head in shortly ! :)
 
Just seen your new post. I have never used the basic modes - in fact I don't remember what they do now :)

Take a few on aperture priority at f5.6 or f8 as RAWs and put them up for a look see.
 
Cheers Robert, i will download when i get home, only have dial-up at work.

One thing i will try this weekend is shoot only in program mode, then see what settings were used and try to learn what aperture/shutter speed i should be using.
 
Will have a look when i get home, i'm pretty sure i have some on 5.6 or 8 on the camera at the moment.
 
the 70-300 i got is ok, its the 18-50 thats soft, im waiting for sigma to get back to me on that...

do a test with the lenses, take a shot of a few dominos in a row, use center focus point, and from that you can see if its back or front focusing, other than that i dont know waht to suggest
 
The Nikkor 18-55 lens is pretty good - not blow your socks off amazing, but it's a very competent lens.
The Canon 18-55 is... Ish, not really that great a lens - and I think that's the underlying issue here.

You've moved from a basic DSLR & a basic lens to an advanced DSLR & a sub standard lens - Get some nicer glass on your 20D and you'll be getting nicer results :D
 
Thats what i thought, which is why i bought the 70-300 it gets some good reviews and wasn't badly prices. The lens i would like is something like the 100-400L, but that is a way off at the moment. I would also like to change the 18-55 for something better like a 2.8 lens for indoor pictures.

As said, i am sure it is just me not being used to the camera and it being a lot more advanced than the old one.
 
the 70-300 apo dg can be a little hit or miss apparently, mine is good and so are many peoples on here but some are apparently not great.

remember the d50 is also building a rather good reputation for producing excellent pics straight from the camera with lovely colours. the 20d pics may just need a little tweaking in PS, but as these chaps have shown it's a great camera.
 
i've bought my camera to work and will upload the pics later, once the bosses have gone and i will use the office broadband to upload some
 
aren't upload speeds at work so much better! I always bring in a usb stick with pictures I want sent to photobox...takes no time at all!
 
I have superfast speed at home, but my office at work only has dial-up, but theres has a ADSL line, so when they go home i upload
 
Remember all digital camera pics need sharpening, nik sharpener pro now have a RAW pre sharpener in it. Then you can play with pic then do final sharpening if required. tis v.good
 
I'm a complete idiot,:bonk: been through the shots i took the other day and i have it setup on focus on closest subject, never realised, that is why my shots are soft.

When shooting some of the ducks there has been an obstacle, such as a branch, and the camera has got this sharp and the duck soft.

Anyway some of the shots without the obstacles are very nice.

So to close, must read the manual.

Don't feel too bad. I had a lot of poorly focused shots at first. Took a long time to work out I needed to change the settings to only use the middle focus point. The little joystick button can select the others manually if you want to use them.
