Hi Guys,

I've recently started a computer review site and I will be using my 400D to take pictures of products for reviews. I have a good space to do it, large desk with a slightly off white background, however lighting is proving an issue. The daylight obviously varies and comes in from one side of the desk.

Is it worth getting some high wattage daylight bulbs to put in a standard light fitting in the middle of the room? If so any suggestions on where to get them cheaply?

Something like this looks affordable but would it suit my purpose?

Thanks in advance guys!

Mark

You'll probably find a cheaper one than that in a shop, I have an 80 watt daylight bulb in my room so I can do fine pen work and it only cost me £10 from a electrical shop! It's more than bright enough for handholding with 400 iso film and a fast lens too.

I'll take a look thanks. Ideally I want something pretty bright, that way I can use a lower ISO and faster shutter speed for upclose sharp shots.

What about diffused flash?.:)

The price is an issue at the moment, was hoping to get up and running for no more than £20 and then improve on the setup over time.

I know what you mean isn,t it always m8.:)

if you're working with it as only source then doesn't need to be daylight - use a tungsten bulb and the tungsten wb ;)

I've never found the wb pre-sets on cameras any good tbh, maybe it is down to low end bodies or lenses, but I guess I could give it another go. The idea behind the daylight bulb was really to give the pictures a nice natural light look without all the issues around changing lighting levels you get with actual daylight.

the natural light look is way more to do with positioning. set a custom wb and see if that works, or splash the cash on a flash rig which is tbh the only way to play :D

So you are saying that these bulbs won't do what I want? I'm not expecting miracles mind, just a nice clean light which I can use day or night for consistent photos.

Unfortunately cash is extremely tight at the moment, out of work etc so even a budget flash rig is out of the question.

Hi Mark

Have a look here Clicky Linky I get mine from the local art suppliers, and I also use the strip ones you can use in Vivariums from our local pet shop around £10 each, I also have a strip desk light with a strip Day light bulb in it

day not enough power, night not really enough controllability. But thats not from much experience tbh I have a set of floods I've played with and went straight back to flash

You can get a 2ft lumilux 18w cool daylight tube and fitting

Trade electrical

You can cut and reattach the fitting box which acts as a shade

If you've got light from one side, why not bounce it back? I do it all the time, sometimes with just a bit of A4. Of course if you are limited to only shooting in the one place the variability of the daylight you are reflecting is still a problem.....
