Would anyone care to comment on this software?
I've just purchased it in the summer sale @ half price (took a chance at that price. lol)
It's my first delve into proper photo editing, so I would love to hear from anyone here who uses it ( Or doesn't) . :)

Welcome to the site Bob.
Quite a few on here use Affinity, I do myself sometimes. It's very good, but doesn't have the DAM (Digital Asset Management - cataloging) functionality of Lightroom, however since Adobe software went subscription only, that pushed a lot of people towards Affinity and others. There are a few cataloging software options out there, some simple, some less so arguably - I can't comment as I'm still using Lightroom/Photoshop mainly having boufght annual subscriptions at Amazon Day prices.

I use Affinity, I bought it when 2 came out and they were doing a special intro price. I haven't found anything that I can't do with it yet, but I'm hardly a power user to be fair. I've found so far though that if there's anything I can't figure out there's almost certainly a YouTube tutorial on it :)

I'm another occasional user. I normally use CS2 (not a typo) as my requirements are fairly basic. When I need more, Affinity comes into play. I am impressed with what it can do - more than I need at any rate. If I was pushed to using one only, I'd probably use Affinity despite the extra learning curve.

I like Affinity but haven't seen the need to get Affinity 2, especially as I would need to upgrade my NIK software as well.

:plus1: For Affinity, cracking piece of software :)

I now use Affinity Photo 2 as my main editor. I really struggled with it and watched some YouTube instructional videos but really started to understand what I was doing when I paid for a more structured online course - Affinity Revolution. Ally started at the beginning and went further than I needed.

Affinity is no better then Photoshop cs6 extended. I have the master collection and the newest photoshop. And I've tried and tested affinity. On merit alone they steel everything that is copy protected from photoshop and use it themselves. As a photographer and artist I find this most disgusting and vile. But it is cheaper, A lot cheaper. They don 't even bother naming the tools any differently to avoid copyright laws. Clone tool in photoshop is clone tool in affinity.

Been using it for few years now, changed over from GIMP and a couple of other programmes, nut Affinity does everything I want in one place.
Much easier to use than any other programme I have tried, and as state plenty of easy to use and to the point tutorials, including their own channel.

Are you actually being serious?

I’m another Affinity fan , I moved to Affinity version 1 a while after Adobe went to subscription and found that for some of the things I do affinity, for example focus stacking was better than photoshop, that may have changed by now
I use Affinity in conjunction with DXO photolab for raw conversion and Affinity for editing, at the time DXO was better than lightroom in my opinion
Am now on Affinity 2 as well
The affinity iPad app is also excellent

Why can't I call my home made cola a Pepsi and sell it to local stores?
Why can't I build a motorcycle and call it a honda hayabusa kawasaki?:P
Why can I make a racing game for p.c. in Canada with cars from: Ferarri, Lamoghini etc but Ferarri in Europe says I can't publish the game for europe because I didn't buy the proper copyright license from them. Ferarri doesn't just own the cars they make, they own the name as well.

I'm not trying to start an argument here between people who don't care about copy right infringement and those who don't.

I'm only saying it's a moral judgement not to use a clone of adobe photoshop who created the tools in the first place and own the copy right to their property.

And I say this once again because I'd like to think when I pay the government in Canada to copyright my art they some gallery can't then just go and print one of my pieces at will without legal ramifications and financial reimbursement to myself.

I don't get it. Rules say not to talk about piracy, but clones of software that brake international copyright law is ok.

deleted my reply, after you edited yours.

disagree almost entirely with what you are saying,

Also disagree with what you’re saying, and it doesn’t help the OP Robert who is looking for advice on software to edit his photos
Also Affinity works in a different way it’s not just a clone of Photoshop, I had to relearn how to work after I moved to Affinity

Yeah, but a clone tool is a clone tool in the same way that hondas and kawasakis have wheels and handlebars.
You need to get off your high horse, or should that be rocking horse.....
You may think affinity have cloned photoshop, but they haven't. Plus, Pepsi is a brand, coke is a brand. Both are cola. Who copied who? Who is infringing who's copywrite? Neither are.
Affinity is an official authorised licensed product and I'd be careful what you imply on an open forum.....

very well put

I tried Affinity a while back and could not get on with it, it was just alien to me after using PS for such a long time.

I also downloaded Affinity to evaluate and found it was hard to find some functions. Its lack of Digital Asset Management make it almost useless for me. The bit depth seems confused in Affinity and while I could export from LR , the files did not go back to the LR catalogue without re-importing unlike PS. I could not use my bespoke calibrated profile for RAW as I can in LR (vital). The Macro facility is similar to PS Actions but not quite as complete. Unlike PS, you cannot save your workspace which is very important for me as I work over two monitors. The Pano and HDR are much more sophisticated in LR. Overall I thought Affinity was a reasonable package but I would not move from LR/PS unless the subscription at least trebled. I do use many of the features of both LR/PS so feel I justify using the Rolls Royce of Image editing. However, I do not drive a Rolls Royce (or Jaguar).

I see folk here trying to use it alongside Photoshop and think it is an either or - not both. It doesn’t have a Lightroom equivalent so possibly not for everyone. I like the one off charge.

Crikey, I need to get going with AP to enable me to understand most of the answers here.
Answers that I appreciate thanks guys (y)
I feel sorry for those who are finding it hard to switch from PS; it must be a bit daunting.
Kind of like me, starting from scratch maybe :)
anyway thank you all for the support.
Bob

Another thing...
Does AP2 auto update regularly, Free?

Apologies, I'll probably be asking dumb questions sooner or later :D

Thanks for the guide but I can see why I did not find this because I do not have an option Windows>Studio. I have v1.9 so too old. So another feature they have copied from Adobe. For my PS workspace, I have every panel open but on my second monitor which is very convenient.

Dave

I don't know if they copied it, it is a feature many programmes have, and have had for a very long time, one of the advantages of a "windows" like system.

As someone stated before, very unlikely adobe would ignore such a copy if it was their copyright :)

Yes, but many people didn't upgrade to 2 and are still very happy with 1
yes, I noticed others have stayed with V1.
if and when ther's an upgrade to V3, I'll have to consult my wallet

Affinity Photo is good software for post processing your images, with added advantage of being a single payment license. A complete package at an affordable price. Its major disadvantage...... it is not Adobe.

It does not include a Digital Assest Manager for organising your images, but I've paired Affinity Photo with DigiKam. DigiKam is a very good bit of open source software. It has all the features required to manage a repository of images..... tags, ratings, date searches and face recognition. Your images remain in the standard filesystem and DigiKam provides an interface for managing them.

Affinity Revolution on YouTube have some great videos to get you started, plus Affinity themselves have some too. It’s a very powerful piece of software for editing photos, though perhaps not the most simple to start with.

With the first version they gave great value for money with a lot of free updates before the second version came out.

I'm an Affinity user as well, just upgraded to 2 because they gave me a price that I couldn't refuse. I was a heavy Photoshop user about 24 years ago, and would still be using it if they hadn't gone [deleted] with their CS. They took my money for an upgrade and gave me nothing. When I tried to get it fixed, they treated my problem like it was a big joke. I have nothing at all to do with Adobe any more.

That's interesting, thanks for that.
I've never used photo management software b/4; I just store my photos in Google Photos and Amazon Prime.
But would like to use proper managers, and DigiKam seems to fit the bill then.
I have downloaded the obligatory YouTube tutorials to look at.
Someone advised Irfanview also.
Which is better/ easier?

IrfanView is a great basic editor, use it all the time, but Digicam or Faststone for "management"

Thought that I'd give DigiKam a runout as Photo Mechanic is soon not to work for me anymore - doesn't install easily on OSX does it? Still hoping to get it going.....

….but never did. May try again another day.

What's the difference between editing and management, please?
Sorry, I'm a bit of a numpty with editing etc  :$

I was offered a two day window to upgrade to Affinity 2 on Saturday , for only £29 the whole set.
I had originally decided not to do so when it came out, but this offer was a no brainer.
