Affinity for free?!

Thanks for the heads up as far as I can tell it’s the iPad apps that are free not ones for Mac and PC

That would be worrying to abandon those using Windows & Mac desktops & laptops.

The teaser and that they have not allowed for any new customers for what may become legacy programs are a bit of a mystery!

FWIW I am downloading the most current version 2.6.4 of the three programs now.

Probably a good idea. At least you'll have the best versions of what might become legacy software. And if, as I suspect, the new software is bloated with AI features, you'll have something to work with while planning what to use in the future.

The new update to infinity which combines all the programs will be free. Watched a video yesterday by one of the developers.

Apparently those wanting the AI features will have to pay for them

Plus FWIW they have included (download required) they have kept the same ML (Machine Learning) Object Selection that IIRC first appeared in Affinity Photo (and suite) in version 2.6

Affiinity studio includes a high quality pixel editor, so its benefits over Lightroom are the same as the benefits (more or less) that Photoshop has over Lightroom.

Like Photoshop, Affinity has no cataloging tools, but unlike Photoshop, which comes with ACR for raw processing (a good but not the best raw processor), the Affinity raw processing module is considered a level below ACR, LR, C1, DXO. So it isn't a replacement for Lightroom, more an addition.

Affinity Studio, as well as being an excellent pixel editor, is also an excellent vector editor and layout program (Desktop Publisher). So, for many people, it’s probably a realistic replacement for Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator.

And, as you need to sign up to the free Canva account to get it, which provides a slew of free graphic design tools, it's also coming with access to lot of capability not found in Lightroom (which you can ignore, as its not part of Affinity Studio). Obviously, Canva are using this as a carrot to entice you to become a paid up member of Canva, but at the moment, it looks easy to forget its part of Canva.

When it was a paid product, it was great value for money, and I am aware many people use it alongside Capture One as an alternative to Adobe. As a free app, it's a great addition to a raw processor like Lightroom.
 
Hmmm - just downloaded the whole suite. Took me less than 10 mins to get up and running.

I have to say that so far I like what I see. I got fed up with Adobe's charging model a while ago so have been using Gimp and recently started learning Scribus for layout. I really liek the alternative of having both apps within one "family". It's very interesting that I can shift Studio on the same document. Would be nice if it also had a Premier killer - but I suspect nobody will beat Resolve.

I do worry though that it will go the way of Capcut - used to be great but now really trivial stuff is pay walled (wipe right may be free but wipe left is paid....). Hope Affinity doesn't go the same way and start shifting useful stuff to Canva once I've learned all the shortcuts.
 
I've been playing a little with the vector side. It is not exactly compatible with Illustrator. It can open but not save in .AI format. It doesn't see the layer order - just everything dumped in a long list. You have to save in their own format, or export as PDF. It is fine, unless your client / printer needs AI. Ironically it dealt with one PDF much better than illustrator. I haven't tried incscape on that one, but I wonder if the apps code is in any way related. It will be interesting to do a full comparison between the two
 
Well, I just used Affinity for the first time for a "real" project. Using their layout tool to design some banner artwork. Very quick and intuitive - I'm afraid it may be all over between me and Scribus ;(

It was only when I was showing it to somebody that I realised then after 30 mins I was already correctly guessing shortcuts. That's the only thing I ever liked about InDesign - if you know Photoshop it's pretty easy. If Canva don't mess this up, it's a keeper.
