Affinity 50% off

If you edit a TIFF then it will save as a TIFF.
Ok - I open a tif file - and whether I work on it or not, if I then click 'save as', it only allows me to save as an afphoto file. I can't choose another format.

In PS I can 'save as' and choose whichever format I want from a pretty big list.

So it's different! That was my point. Doing what you said will overwrite the file. This isn't always what's wanted!

So there's no confusion at this end. As I said, I'm having to learn its foibles.

you have to 'export' it,
Indeed and then you choose your "format" at that point.
A couple of clicks more than CS granted. And it did take a few goes for me to get off pat..
Now though, I don't even notice it.

I was very critical in the early days of the Develop(raw) persona especially if comparing with say LR but its improved a lot and I just DL the next Beta which again they say they've improved the raw engine.
2 key points to me
1. make sure you are using the Serif raw engine and not Apple raw.
2. turn off tone mapping in the assistant option and do your own, even the latest adobe tone mapping goes over the top but turning it off in AP I've been able to get some very natural lighting results which have finally satisfied me enough to forget LR.

Yes, but if you just do "Save" NOT "Save As" it will save in the same format that you opened in. The main disadvantage being that it will overwrite the original file, so it's essential you make a copy of the original.
The problem would be resolved if "Save As" gave the option of other formats, rather than just .afphoto.

In Affinity I use export instead of save, you can choose the format it’s the same thing as saving it
I normally export a Tiff after converting the raw into a separate folder and export the final image as a jpeg

I bought the application when it was reduced in the first lockdown but it didn't set my world alight. Has it improved much in the last year?

Nothing I've noticed, but then I only really bought it for stacking.

It seems strange that when you choose "SaveAs" a drop-down menu appears which ONLY lists Affinity Photo as a file type.
Almost like someone on the programming team forgot to populate the drop down.

Not quite true.
If you edit a TIFF then it will save as a TIFF.
You only need to use the "Export" command if you are changing the "Save" format - in common with most other programs.
This is correct. but there is a strange twist. If you are using Lightroom and use the Edit In facility to edit the file in Affinity Photo, Lightroom will produce a tif (one f) file which Affinity Photo will happily edit. If you then click on Save, Affinity Photo will save the file as a tif (one f) file, but if you export the file, Affinity Photo will insist on a tiff (two fs) file.

As an app Affinity Photo seems very quick and capable. My issues so far, as a beginner with it after years of Photoshop, relate to its different interface.

The frequently-used curves, for instance, are accessed from way down the adjustments panel & you have to scroll to get to them. But lo & behold, Ctrl-M (just like Photoshop!) will not only invoke them, but do so as an adjustment layer. Handy! And Ctrl-L does levels, too.

In PS you can R-click on an image header bar for image size or canvas size menus. No luck there with Affinity, though there are shorcuts instead (Ctrl-Alt-I & Ctrl-Alt-C) - but where's the option for canvas colour???

So on we go, by tiny steps.

I find it very handy that the programmers retain the same shortcut commands - it saves having to learn new stuff.
However, I suspect that they need to be careful with copyright when they do this.
