AF modes for shooting fast moving sports

Another question for those shooting football :)

I did my 2nd full match and had better results. I shot pretty much the whole match at ISO 200 at 2.8. This consistently gave me a shutter speed in AV of between 1200-2500.

Now do people normally shoot in AV or TV when shooting football and what's the target area of shutter speed? I was aiming to keep it above 1/1000. I'm toying with the idea of changing to TV for the next match. I used AV to maintain 2.8 and let the camera work out the shutter speed.

Is this the best way?

2.8 gives a nice seperation between the player and the background but if you can go for f/4 your photos and sharpness of the players should improve. Depending on the ages of who is playing faster shutter speeds are better (the older the faster) but 1/1000 is good you can get away with slower for younger kids but even 10 and up can require faster shutter speed as they can be pretty good.

As for what mode manual is better but AV works if the conditions are changing, just keep an eye on your shutter speed.

Thanks guys, one more game left this season to practice :)

I might try F4 because my photos have been lacking a little sharpness zooming in slightly or cropping. I'm shooting U13's my nephews side and sports is something I've only recently tried and loving the challenge :)
