AF issues with Sigma 150-600 C on a 7Dii

I have used this set-up for the past 18 months generally with success. I have the latest firmware for the camera and the lens and I have customised the lens with a dock. I recently set up for camera for BB focus and had no issues when using some of my Canon lenses, however I used it this week with the Sigma and had AF problems. I was using centre point expanded at a bird reserve, handheld or supported on the hide window. OS was on.

On transferring the images to the pc, they are soft. When I checked which AF points achieved AF using a Lightroom plug-in and in DPP, not one AF locked-on. The message from the plug-in is AF point originally selected but not locked-on. As some of the shots were of static kingfishers I am not best pleased.

The other issue is that the lens struggled to refocus from a distant subject to a close subject and vice-versa.

Before the switch to BB focus I did find the lens was poor at tracking BIF unlike my Canon 300 L IS.

I have yet to do some testing or change the settings but any suggestions would be very welcome.

I frequently have this issue with this lens on my EOS 80D.
I have assumed that the image is too samey for the AF system to cope with when fully focused st the wrong end of the range.

Strange, I noticed the same thing when I had a 80D on loan a couple of weeks ago, I had to resort to manual focus at times.
Don't get the problem on my MKI 7D.
 
Is this the age old problem of reverse engineering by Sigma to make their lens work, soon as a new body/update comes out the lens doesn't work as well as it should because of some revision by Canon that's not communicating in the same way as it was with the lens?

Just had/having a similar problem with the 100-400, using it for a couple of months no problems on my Nikon D500, now all the images are soft,the only thing i have noticed is i cant turn the full time manual focus off via the dock,ican set it for off but it still can MF when the lens is set to AF.

Borrowed a Tamron 150-600 and had no problems with it.

Unless there are some compatible issues with the settings as this is the first time I have used BBF with this lens, I agree it is user error, but what error(s)?

Slow AF is not me.
 
Please post some examples so we can see the problems
 
I had my 150-600 sports misbehave with my 7D2 once. A full lens reset then reprogrammed the custom settings fixed it :)

The issue with soft images is likely to be me. I have taken some further shots at higher speeds and they were OK. I have also found out that if you release the button used for BBF i.e. when you want to lock focus, the AF symbol goes off and will not show in DPP or Lightroom. I am still testing.

The problem with not being able to autofocus when moving from close to distant subjects is still an issue. Yesterday I focused on a flower which was near the min focus distance and then tried to focus on my car which was approx 60 feet away and it wouldn't focus. This was at 600 mm, when I zoomed out out 300mm it was fine.

I will try the reset.

Were you focussing on part of the car with some decent contrast like an edge? Or the middle of a panel?
 
i had exactly the same issues with mine on a 80d it worked okay on my 5dmk3 untill a month ago its stated hunting even in good light think i will have to send it in to be checked i think its still in extended warrenty.
 
Update. Lens was returned to Sigma and they replaced the AF motor, so it was faulty. Hopefully an uncommon issue.
