Yes
Hi all could somone put this in simple terms for me, for some reason this setting on the 400D is not sinking in,

Regards Mark.

Not 100% sure what you need explaining, or if I understand the question. But with ALL AF points selected the camera I believe pics the object closest to the lens to focus on. If you select just one AF point, whatever that point is over regardless of whether closest to the camera, will be the focus point.

The display of the points is like a diamond shape....yes?

Well, you can either have all of them active (in which case the camera will focus on whatever bits are closest) or you can select which one you want to use. Generally, folk tend to go for the centre one, (thats also where the camera meters light from) but that's not always ideal. Whilst you can focus on something, lock the focus and then re-compose, it might be easier to learn how to select the spot you want to use that is closest to the bit you want in focus........does that make sense?

^^^^ yes it does ^^^^ many thanks, there is a setting where they all light up, will be looking into that on next.

Regards Mark.

Not strictly true, in spot metering mode it will be but in other modes it won't. The 400D doesn't have a spot metering so it's never going to be just the centre AF point. It's either going to be evaluative, average or centre weighted. Out of these three on the third has a bias towards the metering the centre.
