For the last week or so I've been plagued with Adware. Just about every time I click on a Threat title a new window ad pops up in this Forum and others. Video clips start playing on various tabs I have open and banners appear at the tops and bottoms of pages. I did download something last night (Superantispyware) which cleared most of it but it must have installed something else as I kept getting error messages telling me a virus/adware in StormVane couldn't be deleted and my PC kept switching it's self off and rebooting over and over. I couldn't access any programmes it just kept logging off and restarting.:rage::rage::rage::rage::rage::rage::rage::rage::rage:

I'm a total technophobe but buggered about with Safe Mode and managed to uninstall StormVane and can now get logged into my PC but I'm now back to having the same problem with the ads/videos etc. I've uninstalled Superantispyware.

My anti virus (F-Secure) doesn't seem to be picking it up.

I thought it may have been a Browser problem but I've tried moving from Chrome to Firefox but the problem still exists.

Can someone please suggest a good adware removal software and a safe place to download it from so I can get rid of this annoying stuff or any other way of doing it (in VERY laymans terms).

I'm gonna spend half of the day backing up my stuff as I had nothing backed since getting this new PC a few months ago:rolleyes::rolleyes:. Lesson learned there, I thought I'd lose the lot.:arghh::arghh:

Cheers!!

Just tidied that up for you
HTH

Ha ha. Ironically enough I don't think that was the cause. Being an impotent old git with the sex drive of a sweeping brush I have no need of such web based titilation:D:D

Malwarebytes; I had to sort a friends out the other day and found that to be suggested in the computer's section

Cheers, I'll have a look at that do you have a safe link? Some of these freebee's seem to download more trash than they get rid of.

PS: I was gonna post this request in the Computer section but thought it'd get more views and response here. Green Gadgies please feel free to more if deemed apposite:)

Agree about Malwarebytes. Also have a look at the free versions of

SpyBot Search and Destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/private/ and

Emisoft Anti Malware http://www.emsisoft.co.uk/en/software/antimalware/. Although this one looks as if you need to buy it, if you click on the download button you'll get a 30 day free trial.

These are not adware blockers but they could help to clear out whatever has put the adware links on your machine.

Run them in Safe Mode.

Dave

Thanks China. I'll have a go.;)

Superantispyware? sounds dodgy in itself..

as said get malwarebytes installed and run a full scan.

(and theres a computers section for this kind of thing ;) )

Cheers.

Please see the above entry;)

Yeh, might head over there coz that bloody Malwarebytes says it has detected over 1000 issues and fixed them but the problem is just as bad. No difference after the scan and clean.

And Reboot?

I share your exasperation with Ads and pop-ups Brash. I installed Adblock Plus some time ago and it works a treat, it'll filter out all Ads and pop-ups. Have a look here https://adblockplus.org/en/firefox
It's made for Firefox and will install itself after downloading.
I know forums like this depend on Ads to keep them running but I've got such poor bandwidth and DL speed I reckon I need Adblock.

Also consider

If possible run the software in safe mode or as an attached drive. I tend to go in the order of adaware, spybot, malwarebytes, and avast and run them all regularly.

Sometimes a complete format and re-installation of everything is the only way to get rid of this stuff and can be quicker and safer in the long run, I keep clean system backups, the whole process takes only about half an hour and you are up and running again.

Superantispyware isn't dodgy but it also is not wonderfully good.

Are you running the anti-adware software in safe mode, Brash?

Others will know better than me but I feel sure I've read that for difficult to remove problems, switching off the system restore can help -- turn off the sys restore, run security progs, reboot, turn sys restore back on.

Dave

I guess you have tried System Restore to take the computer back to a time before you started having the issue? Probably won't work but worth a mention anyway. :D

I've no idea how to do that. It was just luck that I managed to delete StormVane via Safe Mode.

That was the first thing I tried but there are no restore points and unlike on XP I can't seem to pick a previous date. I looked at Youtube and it says Windows should automatically create restore points every 7 days or so or when new software is added but there's nowt on my System Restore to pick from. I created one last night but even that's gone as well.

What is your operating system

Try looking in msconfig (start, run, msconfig). Have a look at the startup tab and list what is ticked there.

Not an option. I lost loads of stuff when I moved to my new PC and I've no clue how to back up all my programmes. I've done it with documents and iTunes but other software, games, Word, Excel, Lightroom, Elements etc etc I've no idea and had to buy new licenses/security code for stuff I already had paid for on my previous PC to get it on my new one. Don't wanna risk that again.

Windows 7. Got a start button but not a run. When I type misconfig in the text box next to the start button nothing come up.

On your keyboard press & hold the 'Windows Key' then press 'R', it should bring up the run box to allow you to type msconfig

:D:DJust realised I typed mis instead of ms.

What am I looking for now?

No that don't work either.

Try downloading and running the "Junkware Removal Tool" on this page here: http://thisisudax.org/ (this is the software developers page about it).

It's not exactly a very well known tool, but I tried it on recommendation from an IT friend to try to remove a very persistent browser hijacker that I had. Once I'd run it the problem went away instantly; if your computer bluscreens when you first run it, just run it again after it's restarted and it'll work fine. It can take a little while to scan, but the results can be well worth it.

Right got something coming up in holding Windows button hold R.

If you can get MSconfig up go to the Startup tab and select disable all, then reenable your antivirus software, close and reboot. Once rebooted run Malwarebytes etc. to clean things out. It's not bulletproof it'll work as intelligent malware will just regenerate on startup and hide / stop antivirus / malware scanners from functioning properly. But it's a start.

Won't download for me. Goes through an black page where it says it's checking registry, files, system etc etc and then I get an html document and nothing changes.

Thanks, I'll try that later ma' heid's mince right now.:D

I was horrible riddled a few months ago tot he point where I was about ready to reformat and start again, no single program fixed it.

From memory I used the following

Malwarebytes
adwarecleaner
Kaspersky TDSSkiller
Junkware removal tool

Then some registry fixing software that I can't remember the name of.

That means that you've run it (it works in the command line so you don't actually install anything). The document that comes up at the end will tell you if anything has been removed, if you closed it before reading it search for "JRT.txt" as that is the document. If not just run it again, an alternate download link is http://thisisudax.org/downloads/JRT.exe

You might want to try "Hitman Pro" as well. It's quite good for finding/removing things, and you get a free 30 day trial after installing. http://www.surfright.nl/en/hitmanpro

Right I've tried Kaspersky TDSSkiller as well as Junkware (which didn't seem to work/download). I'm still getting the odd pop up but not as frequently as I was. Also, when I boot up now I get to my home screen in about 3 seconds where as recently it was taking about 2 minutes after entering my PC log on password so at least that's improved.

Brash I think we posted at nearly exactly the same time, look at my comment above.

Yeh, thanks Samual. Looks like something has kicked in. Get a pop up every 15-20 clicks now instead of every second click I can just about cope with that and as I said my logon is a lot faster and web pages are loading quicker too.

Cheers!!!!

Just done over 40 clicks on various Forums and websites and no pop ups of pain in the @rse video clips playing in the BG. I usually have 15 tabs open and have to close them down one at a time to see where the bloody whiter than white Daz advert is belting out from:D

@BRASH once the dust has settled if you're using Firefox as your browser use the addon called "Adblock Plus" (link) it'll save a lot of hassle when surfing. The best addon by far is "Noscript" but take a bit of work to use it but it's worth the effort.
