hello everyone, as a complete beginner and not knowing a great deal, just one question, if somebody offered you a nikon D70 or a canon 30D which would you have?, now i know there are going to be a lot of pros/cons for each camera plus nikon/canon fans but i just need to know from a novice point of view. thank you.

30D all the way :) I have one as a backup (was my main camera) and it is an awesome piece of kit, even now when the 50D is upon us!

I think it's worth going off to the shops at this stage and having a feel of the latest offerings from Nikon and Canon. It's likely that whichever you choose from the D70 or 30D will tie you in to that manufacturer for the forseeable future (lenses and accessories).
Once you've decided where you might be heading in the future then it will help you decide what to go for now.....both would be adequate to cut your teeth on.

Sound advice from Canon Bob

i have handled them both, the D70 with grip on and a 50mm, which felt really good, and then the 30D without grip with 18-70 kit lens which i thought the body felt good but the lens seemed 'plasticy?', the 30D did not have a grip on or came with one but the nikon came with the grip + the 50mm f1.8. really think i will be having the nikon.

I'll be contrary as usual...

Canon Bob made a very good point: if you find yourself getting into photography seriously, then you're likely to stick with the same system you start with (because selling lenses, accessories etc in order to switch systems is expensive hassle).

But I don't think Bob went far enough. Handling the current Canon and Nikon bodies isn't that helpful, because in 5 years time they'll be obsolete but you'll still have the same system. And for heavens sake don't base your decision on whether the cheap Nikon lens is less plasticky than the cheap Canon lens!

I think you should look at the elements of Canon's and Nikon's systems other than the bodies, because there's more stability there. Here's my take on it.
* If you like photographing wildlife, birds, aircraft, and outdoorsy things - buy the Canon. They have much better options with regard to telephoto lenses, and are likely to continue to have for the foreseeable future.
* If you like photographing people and indoorsy things - buy the Nikon. Nikon's flash system is more intuitive and more flexible than Canon's.
