Hey guys, I've just joined the phorum to get some advice on my photography based DT project for school. I'm making a storage unit for lots of pro camera equipment, DSLR's, lenses and accessories, it's going to be made out of wood and have separate compartments for the gear.

Can some people comment and say how much camera stuff they have, and where they keep it when not in use. I'm not sure about you but I have to leave lenses lying around when I pack light.

Hi Matthew.

Welcome to TP

That's a difficult question to answer as everyone has different kit and storage needs. Personally I use a Lowepro Magnum 650 to store kit at home (2 x bodies, 5 lenses, 2 flashes, filters etc etc...) and a couple of plastic storage tubs for all the other bits and pieces such as umbrellas, tripod heads, triggers, the list goes on. The Magnum is great to transport all my kit, but for general walkabout i use a Lowepro shoulder bag as the Magnum is a bit of a beast.

As it's a school project i would just select a target audience and build for that. I would say that anyone who may consider a fixed wooden storage solution over a bag for home storage would have a lot of kit. Anyone with just a couple of bodies / lenses is likely to just use a bag.

Alos, its worth having a look around Google & YouTube for camera storage to see what is already out there.

TP is a great forum for sharing advice, hopefully you'll stick around after the project

Hi

I have 1 camera body, 3 lenses, 2 tripods, a couple of filters and about a dozen SD cards. I also have a compact. I do intend to build on my kit and I'm currently looking for another body and will probably aim for 3 more lenses.

Currently I keep all my bits and bobs in a box with a lid. When I'm out and about I normally carry in a fold away dry bag mainly because I had a shoulder bag and I didn't find it particularly comfortable or easy to use. As I normally don't put my camera away I find it easier to keep my lenses in separate covers in a bag I'm carrying.
It's not ideal and I do intend to invest soon.

Hope that answers your question
Cheers
Kel

Thanks that's really helpful, I've had a look at the magnum and it looks like exactly the type of storage that I had in mind. However I was looking to design something that looks like an item of furniture, preferably out of wood, that obviously isn't portable, possibly having a couple of draws and compartments. The idea is you could place it in a study or office, at it would fit in, rather than looking like you've dumped a rucksack on the floor! And also increase protection.
