Has anyone experience of Sigma's 70-300 F4-5.6 DG Macro lens?Would the
picture quality compare with my Nikon 55-200 and would it work with my D40?

Yes, I had one, iq was very good, much better than the 55-200 I bought which suffered from vignetting so i got rid of it.
The new ones with HSM will autofocus on your D40, not the older ones and you can use it as a pretty good macro lens, you wont get 1:1 ratio images. but i think you will be impressed.
Heres a pic I took with mine, set on Macro at 300mm with flash.

That's my sort of photo, Allan. Thankyou for the reply, how do I know if it's got HSM? The ad. says it's brand new but I have a lot to learn! Mick.

It should say HSM it's a good selling point ..Sigma have the OS (Optical stabilizer) as well sure they do an 18-135 and 18-200mm HSM with OS .

sigma i don't thinks it's got HSM...i have the 28mm-300mm EX DG Macro with hood it's a very good lens sharp and light weight mine has no lens creep at all ...poss thinking of selling.
