Hi

In the late January i am going to the ice hotel.

any words and advice of taking my camera into the cold and any experince of anyone who has been.

My main worry is the amount of light so i will take my nifty fifty and also my other worry is my 400d breaking so any advice

thanks

Mark

Take lots of batteries !!! The cold drains them alot faster !

As above - keep 'em warm!

If you take any spares, keep them inside coat pockets, as close to the body as possible :)

And when the camera has been warm, dont just leave it in a very cold place afterwards otherwise condensation could set in ....

Hi

thanks, I will take two batteries but i thought condensation only formed when cold met the warm so how do i prevent this.

any other help would be great

thanks

Mark

Condensation forms when cold meets warm but it does disappear, so if you can, leave the camera somewhere it can get as cold as the outside temperature (locked & hidden in a car overnight for example). Always try & let the camera adjust to new temperatures slowly.

The other thing you might like to check out is the "operating temps" of memory cards
As far as I can find ( I am off to Finland in a couple of days) the sandisc ultra and extreme III ( & IV) are the only ones that operate below O oc

cobra what other precautions are yo taking with regard to the cold?

thanks

As I have never been before, I am a bit in the dark too but there is this thread that might help

Also handle with care as plastic may become brittle in extreme cold.

Going into the cold wont be the problem. Its when you return to the warm that the condensation will appear.
When you return to a warm area make sure the camera isn't left in your camera bag.
Remove the lens from the body and Keep them in a nice ventilated area until they warm up and any moisture has gone.If you allow plenty of air to get to the camera you wont have any problems.:)
