I would like to have a service of my Nikon FE2 (35mm); though everything is working, the seals need replacing and the meter needs checking for a possible re-calibration and the shutter speeds need checking and a good clean for the whole camera.

Has anyone tried/have experience of these:

http://www.aztechservices.com

or who have you used?

Fixation have kindly replied with the following:-

Thanks for your email. We can adjust the metering and check the speeds and replace the foams on your camera. However if there is anything wrong with your camera then there is nothing we can do as the spare parts for your camera are no longer available.

The cost of the service as described above is:
Labour: £75.00 Plus VAT
Parts: £15.00 Plus VAT

I hope you don't think I'm mean, but that sounds alot. Is it to you?

Thanks

Alistair

2 hours at £38 per hour approx. With premises, wages for the technician and wages for those that don't actually earn anything like cleaners, receptionists etc the price seems reasonable enough to me.

Hmmm No but I would look around.

I had a Yashica TLR which I dropped and knocked everything out of alinement.

So sent it off, sorted the focusing, serviced the camera and replaced the light seals and it came back as good as new but that cost me just over a £100.

Most places seem to have a "mimimum charge" drop Newton And Ellis clicky a line but I think they maybe in the same ball park. But I have used them for 3 bits of kit OM4, Nikon 105 and the Yashica and I would use them again.

Can't offer any advice on aztechservies as I have never used them.

PS Light seals are not hard to replace, bit fiddley but can be done.

I'm pretty certain Fixation charge £70 an hour or thereabouts so that will be one hour, or that's what I recall paying them for a repair they did for me last year, can't fault them though, great service and competent repair. Newton Ellis seem ok too, I've popped in a few times to ask about bits and pieces as they are local to me and they've always been helpful but I've never had a repair done by them. (yet)

I believe Real Cameras in Manchester do repairs, not sureb what their going rate is but if anyone has spares it will be them. If their camera prices are anything to go buy they might be a bit cheaper than fixation.

As Darren says - it's only £38 a hour - you'd pay more than that per hour for a gorilla with a spanner at your local Vauxhall Dealer.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I feel both a fool and ashamed now that I didn't give enough thought to Fixations charges and the reality of them.

I have emailed Newton Ellis, MW Camera Repairs & AJ Johnstone the following:

I have a lovely black Nikon FE2 that I feel needs a check-up / service. The seals are in need of changing and I would like the meter to be checked and re-callibrated (if necessary) and the shutter speeds checked please. Absolutely everything IS working but I feel after years of great service, the camera deserves a good professional clean and service.

How much would you charge for the above please?

Thanks

Alistair

End-quote.

I will keep the thread posted for the benefit of all who may be needing the same info'(sooner or later)

Once again. thanks

Alistair

i'd change the light seals and mirror foam myself,,check the meter against the d200 and put a roll of film through it and see what it looked like .

Don't frett, its easy to lose sight of the economy of repairs when a CLA actually exceeds the value of the camera.
But that's the way things are in post digital film camera land.:)

Thanks for the kind words Joxby - much appreciated.

Here is the latest:

AJ Johnstone wanted to see the camera first and give a free estimate:-

Thank you for your enquiry, due to the nature of the fault we would need to examine the equipment extensively before we could advise of the cost to repair.
Please forward the equipment to us with a copy of our emails, and we will provide you with an estimate free of charge, which may be useful if you are making an insurance claim against the equipment.

Further information is below if you wish to forward your camera to us, including all our contact details and opening hours:-

Hello,

To service and clean a Nikon FE2 and to replace the light seals is usually £80 + vat. I use a Nikon FE and FM myself, they are all great cameras.

Regards.

Now 'Medwaygreen' (of this august forum) suggested MW Camera Repair:

Here is their reply:

I have taken some soundings on MW Camera Repairs and am happy to try them out. If all goes well, I will ask for a quote on my FM2n and bring that up to spec as well.

I will keep the thread up to date as and when.

...me too.

Thank you everyone for the input.

I have indeed decided to re-seal at home and test against another Nikon and a meter. If there are problems then I will go a full service at MW Camera Repairs.

I will keep you informed and post some pics from it just as soon as.

Funnily enough, I've just bought two Nikon FEs in the last few days and the first one had rotten seals throughout. I bought a universal seal kit (11.50GBP) from this guy (http://www.cam-spares.com/page3.htm) and followed the excellent online instructions to complete the job. It looks like new now :D! Not only was it all fairly straight forward, but it gave me a chance to really check the camera over thoroughly and now I am confident that it is going to behave itself in the field.

There's enough material left to do several more bodies, but my second FE appears to have been re-sealed quite recently (apart from the long, thin door recess seals), so I won't have as much to do with that one :|. Still, doing this job yourself is a great way to save money, as it's more time consuming than really 'difficult'. On top of that, it will add to the value of your camera, if you do it tidily enough ;).

I've got a Yashica TL Electro to do, I got the seals from bay-e of from the US. Looks easy enough.....but we'll see after the weekend.

Cheers

Andy

Hi, just an update - I received the seals from interslice on Monday and found that I had some time yesterday pm and so re-sealed the camera and generally cleaned it.

I fitted a new dioptre and then went to fit a B2 focus screen only to discover that I had been sent a K2. So, not quite there. I have emailed the company (Exposure UK) and am hoping that they have the B2 and have sent the wrong screen out in error.

I will upload some pics of the finished job as soon as...

Thanks to all for your input.

I am finally catching up with developing and scanning AND taking some pics of the FE2 that featured in this thread.

Black Nikon FE2 complete with new seals - perfect meter and shutter speeds!
