First off i'm not sure if this question should be here on in the portraits board. I chose here as the portraits board seemed to be photographs taken rather than discussion.

I would like to take some self portraits, mostly because I have no one to take photos of :( But I don't understand how to sort the focusing out. when I've had a play about with the camera I'm never in focus.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Ideally you will need a cable release, set the camera and flash up on a tripod, then through a number of test shots try to determine where your head is in relation to the focus area, set an aperture of f5.6 or so to ensure there is enough depth of field and away you go.

Where do you live?

Thanks, I'll give that a go.

I'm in Manchester (well about half an hour away)

Might be a stupid suggestion but one I'm going to try as I'm in the same position, but I'm going to try putting a mop head where I'm going to be and try setting the focus on that. Could that work?

I do mine at arms length :D

But I wont have to for much longer hopefully, what with my birthday coming up, I might get some treats ;)
