Hi,

I have just started photography and have realised that I need a new computer. Is a laptop suitable for image editing (using say Elements)?

I don't think I would want to spend a long time on editing but have no experience with editing images on computers at all. A laptop would suit me better than a PC but would really like to hear what experienced users think.

Thanks

Mike

You can do a lot with image editing with just a few clicks. Laptops are OK, but I find a screen with lots of area/resolution much more workable. Additionally, desktops are generally more powerful for your money so are quicker at doing post processing. Also, good monitors (and calibration) do make a big difference, but it all costs money...

Mike,

A few questions

What is your current machine and its spec?
What problems do you have with the current one that makes you want a new one?
What is your budget?
Is a laptop essential?

Dave

Mike,

I've just purchased a laptop with the intention of replacing my ageing desktop machine with it for photo editing. With this in mind I got a 64bit machine running 64bit Windows 7 (other OS are available ... and maybe even better) and a 17" screen.

What I can see already is that although the laptop will suffice for quick and dirty editing (and I will be able to do away with my base station) I'm going to retain the large monitor and wireless keyboard/mouse for serious editing sessions.

HTH :)

Depends on your budget mate. You can go as crazy as 27" Mac screens or stick to a modest laptop but in my experience I am not tied to a desk if I have a Laptop convenience. :)
