hello all
I am in the market for a new computer for phot editing purposes and done really have the space to set up a desktop machine .
So if you could give me some advice regarding what Iv come up with . Please remeber I am in no way a pro and don’t really do video or huge resolution raw files , and I use external storage .
My thinking is buy a nice spec 2017 MacBook Pro and use that for 90% of my editing but for the occasional more in-depth editing work run it through a 27” 4K moniter that I have use of when required .
Thoughts please as I am pc illiterate and not much better with a Mac .

An iMac would give you great performance and would
take less space than a laptop / monitor combo!

Yea I have been considering an I Mac as well but using a desk top fixes me into a place I don’t always want to be and knowing how lazy I am I’m worried I’d not actually do the editing work I really need to be doing .
Still open to suggestion though and I’m taking it all on board thank you .

It’s not the size of the machine that’s an issue it’s the Desk chair etc required to position it permanently.

Are you already a Mac user? If not, they offer no advantages over a non-Apple machine, and you would be restricted to a screen size of 15" max. If yes, then you have no choice and should buy the machine with the most RAM and storage that you can afford, because Macbooks cannot be upgraded.

TBH editing on a 15" screen is a bit crap really - certainly doable, but far from ideal, and even 17" isn't really OK except when you must be mobile.

*edit* I see you were trying to make an offer on a 17" Dell for £400 - that or something similar would have be ideal.

I am already a Mac user yes but my MacBook is about 7 years old and getting quite tired hence the upgrade
I am also a dreadful non editor in that I take a few photos with reasonable eye but tend to stick them in a hard drive and never touch them which needs to stop .

Yes I was considering the dell
Are the screens ok on those machines for editing with a view to print baring in mind I do have access to a 4K monitor for occasional checking before ordering bigger prints

Provided the screen is IPS and can be calbrated then it will be OK - just make sure you get 1080P or better.

There's no difference in the way Lightroom works between Mac and PC, but you may find the PC experience challenging if you've been a lifetime Mac user.

thanks everyone for the input , its a difficult decision because i know a iMac is the better option but has its own drawbacks , if i was in any way doing photography for a job then all of this would be moot but as its only a hobby and none of these items are cheap i want as much info as possible before making the decision .
ill be spending the next few days up to a week reading reviews etc before parting with any cash .
