Being a Pentax user - and very happy with my K30 - I know absolutely nada about other makes.

Have a very hard up mate down in the big smoke who is out quite a bit with his camera. Recently he found he was on his last SD card so I asked what he was using and arranged a top up of 3 x 8GB cards.

He has the idea that an 8GB card is as big as he can use - well it's what the manual says :)

And we all know that usually you can go a bit bigger than that :) I happily use 16GB cards - could go bigger BUT would also stand to lose more 'stuff ' if something happened to the card [ and thing can happen for no good reason]

OK his gear is
* Nikon D80
* Nikon DX AF-S NIKKOR 18-135mm 1:3.5-5.6G ED
* Nikon DX AF-S NIKKOR 55-200mm 1:-5.6G ED
* Jessop DG 2x N/AF Tele-converter

At the moment he's spending time doing the Capital Ring Walk and getting some lovely images from there - about 100 on each 2 hour walk !!

He bought his camera 2nd hand in 2013 off another Forum [ not a photography one ;) ]

So come on experts - I've a chance of getting some unused unwanted SD cards for him [ not saying what size they are :D ]

SO how big a card can I get for him ? -- 16Gb ? 32 GB ??

I normally use Lexar Professional, as fast as I can get - Class 10s of course

I have a 64gb but rarely use it in my Pentax, only for video recording.

If the manual says that 8GB is the biggest he can use, I would get him a few 8GB cards. As you say, bigger cards = more shots lost if/when a card craps out... Nikon USA seem to only list up to 4GB cards here but a SanDisk forum here would appear to disagree. At a guess, the manual was probably written when 8GB was the biggest available card but technology has improved since then! FWIW, I've just stuck a 16GB card in my old D70 and it reports about 8x the capacity for shots as its normal 2GB card does and the Nikon knowledge base says this. Hopefully someone with a D80 and big cards will be able to give a definitive answer.

That was my guess about the manual and card size - thanks Nod :)

I'm certainly asking for trouble here - but I've never had a card give me problems < Looking round for a HUGE amount of wood >

Flipping heck - thanks to Nod giving a link to the Nikon KB I found https://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/14048

In the name - and that was updated in 2013 !!!!

His manual suggests 8GB and yet the KB gives something very very much smaller .

I used a 16GB when I had a D80. Never had a problem. Pretty much the same cost as an 8 nowadays anyway

Thanks - I'm now easy - I'm being given 4 x 16GB Sony SD cards :) so once these arrive from a friend in the USA [ never been used, and will not be either ] I'll pass them on to my Nikon using friend - his need is greater than mine - I actually have some Lexar 16GB Cards still in their boxes upstairs so I'm OK [ I also have 2 unused ones in my camera bag - ready for action ]
