Advice please

I have a photo shoot planned, all makes sense on paper and in my head, researched my location, got the models etc but all that's left to organise is the lighting.
I'm all a bit 'self taught' only being 19 not going to college to study photography as stupidly my maths grade let me down and i didn't get the right amount to get in!

Im looking to achieve the lighting effect similar to this, excuse the google link i wasn't sure how to explain it.

I know this is achieved with some sort of 'umberella' type set up as i have seen a behind the lens shot, but i need help as i know nothing about off camera lighting, will i need to hire or purchase and how many ££'s am i looking at.
Hope you can help me, and i will deffinatley share the end product when done! :)

You've linked to a page full of different photos, so I can't tell you how they were all setup.
Link to the one photo, you want, ensure you're not breaching copyright by owner and look on this forum on how to post pictures.
 
I'm fairly confident there's a big dose of flash in there, I'd be surprised if it was an umbrella, I'd have thought more just a plain reflector or beauty dish, either way you'd get similar results.

Its a bit of a tough one if you know nothing about off camera flash, but your normal flash gun wont be powerful enough, you need portable battery powered studio type heads, which start around £700 upwards.

If you can afford to hire lights and just play with them, using any willing victim, you'll get there in the end. Alternatively see if you can find someone in your area doing outdoor work with flash and see if you can tag along on a shoot. The site you linked to are in Yorkshire, see if they can help?

Oh, and don't worry about being self taught, the best of us always are ;)
 
Oh thank you, I didn't realise they were in yorkshire too, Now to go on the search for a flash! I don't own one of those yet!

I am now completely lost, what flash that wont break the bank is best for my 1000D and what do i need to be able to have it sat away from my camera?

Katie, just be aware of what you're taking on here. The image you have linked is taken by a seasoned professional with a lot of high grade kit and even more experience and knowledge. It is not easy.

I salute your ambition and we've all got to start somewhere of course, but that's usually with modest gear and much easier (ie human) subjects. You will have more success that way, learn a lot, and the principles can be applied to anything. Take it from there :thumbs:

Its all just a trial run with a willing subject i might just try without now and see where i go from there!

look where the shadows are in relation to what is causing them - you can see some from the bridle gear and if you look on the tree you can see a strong one from some of the leaves.

As has been said this is most likely a big flash source however there are 2 times of day where you might get the same direction of light - the strength though is dependant upon the weather, probably not very good at the moment.
