I'm currently using Photoshop CS2, but don't have ACR. As I'm totally confused at Adobe's website, could somebody on here please advise me whether I can use the most recent version of ACR with it, or what would be the most recent compatible version. Any other suggestions welcome. The camera is still the D90.

Many thanks for any help or suggestions.

ACR is not a seperate programme but built into Ps. So the ACR you have with CS2 will be the latest you can upgrade to without needing a new Ps.

The latest version of Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) which can be used with CS2 is 3.7:

http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html

The earliest version of ACR which will support the D90 is 4.6:

http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html

Therefore you will be unable to open your D90 RAW files in CS2. If you really want to use ACR directly on your RAW files you will have to get a later version of Photoshop or Elements.

To save your pennies, you can use the Adobe DNG converter to convert the D90 RAW files to the Adobe DNG format which can then be read by ACR in CS2:

Alternatively, also free, use Nikon's View NX2 to convert your RAW files to TIFF format (to keep the most information in your file) which can then be edited in CS2:

Other choices dependent on budget.
Upgrade to CS6 sell your body and soul unless YOU are a student.
Buy Elements. Essentially a cut down Photoshop suitable for 90% of people. Cheapest Adobe option
Photoshop Lightroom. More than Elements a lot less than photoshop. Although not as great as Photoshop or elements for manipulating an image, it does have a great work flow and storage and again is suitable for a lot of photographers.

Ha, Ha! Long past that stage, I'm afraid; been drawing the pension for longer than I can remember - just trying to get to grips with the many and varied aspects of digital.

Anyway, many thanks to all of you for the useful info and links which have cleared up a lot of the confusion in my mind.
