Advice please?

Since I took up photography just over a year ago, I have happily been using OH's old Canon 1000D but now wish to upgrade. Want to stay with Canon. I do mainly bird and wildlife and dabble a bit in landsacape, flowers etc and do a lot with our pets. OH not very forth-comming with advice re what I should go for, my son who is a professional photographer has said he will "get back to me on it" but knowing son it could be next year before I get an answer. Any suggestions of which model I should go for and why would be gratefully received. I'm not looking to buy now - it will be a few months yet - hopefully the pre-Christmas offers.

What about lenses? What lenses have you got?

The lens I use most is a Canon 70 -300 IS USM, but if sitting in a hide will use a Sigma 500 lens (too heavy for me to hand hold). I feel I need something with a higher ISO at least.
