:shrug:newbie help reqd, i have a nikon 50mm 1.8 lens,when fixed to my nikon d40
what camera setting would be best to use.
any advice most welcome.

IS it a 50mm AF-D?

If so it will work like any other lens, you will just have to foucs.

If it is older than that the screen will read some thing like "non-CPU lens" and it will not meter, so you will have to turn it to manual and set the shutter speed and change the apatue on the lens its self and try and guess the exsposure,

Depends what you want to shoot. Stick the camera in A, then dial the aperture into 1.8 to get the best for low light.
Or, dial the aperture to F8 and get some nice portraits..
 
Bear in mind also at f/1.8 the focusing must be spot on, as the DOF is so shallow, one tiny error in your focus can ruin the shot. For people/animals, focus on the closest eye, for other objects, pick the area of most interest. A flower, I'd pick the stamen for example.

Play with the different appertures, but remember the higher your f number, the longer the shutter speed will be, so you may want to pu the camera on a tripod.
