Ok people ,I'd like to start displaying some pictures online.I've only really heard of Flicker .
Would anyone like to share their knowledge of sites.I'm looking for a free site initially ,my main concern is the ability to protect images from being lifted and used without permission ,also I guess an unlimited or high number of pictures to be displayed would be good.
I've no experience of these sites ,so would love to hear peoples thoughts.

Thanks

Flickr can be limiting unless you are with BT and get a pro account free, have a look at Fotopic I have been using them for years plenty of free space and if you ever need to buy more its dirt cheap

Flickr is free for basic account - but it is limited to the amount you can upload each month.

Preventing images from being lifted is next to impossible. What you can do is upload low resolution images which will have a limited use to others as well as add a watermark to the image.

If an image is on the web, it can be lifted. I have all my pics on FlickR restricted to me able to view only but I can link to them to show them elsewhere like on this forum, at which point anyone who wanted to steal a crap photo could simply right click it and save the picture as... I could watermark them which makes it harder to steal and hide the fact that it's been stolen but if anyone wants a copy, all they have to do is ask nicely and send money!

Thanks for the reply Kevin.
Any Idea how I watermark an image using CS5?

I do intend to get my own page at some point soon , but as a starter looking @ Flicker or similar .

My main background is film based ,so the whole digital thing is a proverbial mine field to me !

Mark, I can't (won't) afford CS5 so use PSE8. IIRC, it's a similar process using a new text layer and playing with the traqnsparency until you feel it's what you want. Of course, for a smaller mark at the edge, you neeedn't play with transparency, just leave it as a contrasting block of text on an unimportant part of the image.

just leave it as a contrasting block of text on an unimportant part of the image.

...so that anyone who wants to steal the image can just crop it off!!:cuckoo:
Make it large over an important part of the image - maybe at 60% transparency - experiment.

Sparks68uk, maybe you should make a website one day... And you will be able to add as many photos as you want. But if you want to show your photos to other people, I can recommend you to take part in one very interesting project which I found recently. It's dedicated to “The 100 days of Active Resistance”. You can find many interesting photos there. People share their photos trying to tell us something, to show their attitude to life and what they want to change in the world.

snapfish...you cant download those images

Ideally yes my own site would be nice. But I've no Idea where to start with that ,who you approach and costs involved, any info on this would be appreciated also .
I will check out your link also Patricia, thanks for the reply .

I can't afford it myself Nod ,I have use of a friends copy ,well out of my price range and in truth at this point due to my lack of experience, far more options, menu's and buttons that I need ......

I agree too for valuable images but just to get your information (name etc) onto an image without spoiling it, a simple tag along the bottom edge is often enough. Some people may think twice about stealing an image if they see the © symbol.

Anything that appears on a screen can be stolen, either by finding the source code or by the simple expedient of one button pree followed by pasting into an image manipulator.

With the millions of photographs available around the world, what's the chances of having a picture stolen. I stopped using watermarks. Didn't see the point really. Mind you my pics aren't that great anyway.

Watermarks are useful, although it depends on what you're photographing. I tend to watermark my urbex stuff as there's been a number of instances of the press lifting images from the web and using them without permission. While watermarking won't stop this, at least it'll drive traffic to my website if it ever happens:D

To explain my want of protection.I used to shoot live bands on film and spent a few years doing this, that was some time ago now.The only way things got published back then was if you parted with a hard copy of the picture and obviously you knew who had it and were paid when the image was used..Now I want to get back into it and need to show and protect my work.

You can post up to 200 images with a free Flickr account.

IIRC, if you add any more, the oldest ones drop out and there's no limit on monthly uploads though.
