Hi All,

I was wondering if anybody had any specific words of advice when it comes to purchasing a wide angle lens?

In last months (perhaps two months ago) edition of Digital Photography, there was a *landscape* special with a planned route around the Lake District and I would like to invest in the lens before doing the excursion.

All advice most welcome.

Matt

NB Apologies if there is another thread with this information.

Matt, welcome to TP...

Before the experts on here can help with any suggestions to the various wide angles available what camera is the lens going on and what budget are you trying to get to ?

Apologies chaps - how foolish of me ..... too much rushing!

I am using a Canon 450d and as for the budget, if i could keep in the region of £200 I would be happy: I understand that such an amount may be restrictive but on my student budget there are strict limits :)

Best,

Matt

£200 may be a tad of a push, at the cheaper end of the market the Sigma 10-20mm f4.5 is a cracking lens :D

Could be worth having a look through the classifieds on here and seeing what they go for :D

I'm guessing you've already got the 18-55mm kit lens with the camera which could also be used.

Depends how wide you want but I got a Tokina 12-24 off here used a couple of years ago for £200, unfortunately prices have risen since then so both the Tokina and the Sigma 10-20 will be out of that price range.

You'll probably be able to find something like the Sigma 17-70 for that sort of price though. :)

I think £200 maybe a little prohibitive, I paid £290 for my Sigma 10-20 which was ex-display but from a dealer. So you may get lucky for around £250 on the classifieds...

But if you can find a 10-20, it's a cracking lens as TheNissanMan said, I've had mine about a year now and it's almost always bolted to the front of my camera!

It's a shame there aren't any UWA primes for DX.

Thanks for the replies - I will have a look around the classifieds just in case there is anything for sale on there.

I thought that the budget would be restrictive, however, I am happy to go up a little if I can source a bargain...

Thanks again,

Matt

I paid about £350 if I remember correctly from Kerso on here for a new one, took a while to come through as it wasn't in stock but still very cheap. Be prepared to wait if not in stock lol.

Can't speak for Canon but the old Nikon AI/AIS manual focus wide angles are vastly overlooked, mostly better quality (build and image quality) than the current AF models and sell for a fraction of the price. 20mm AI & AIS, 24mm AI & AIS and 28mm AIS, take your pick.
