Hi there
i am using a 400mm 2.8f vr11 lens with a D800 i have a old tripod which i think might of been on the ark its heavy and cumbersome as christmas is coming might treat myself to some thing light and easier to use. So guy and gals what do you recommend ?

Regards Rob

Gitzo 5 series would be the obvious tripod choice, but I know some bird photographers also use the series 3 for this sort of weight kit

The systematic type without the central column would probably be best, guessing you use a gimbal or very heavy duty ballhead.

I do know of a 5541LS for sale secondhand with or without the wimberley head

Cheers
Rich

The Gitzo GT3541 would be man enough for that combination, however, if you're going to 500/600mm and above, then it would have to be the 5 series IMHO.

Thanks Rich

Think the 400mm f/2.8 is heavier than the 500mm f/4, certainly is in the Canon range and would be surprised if it wasn't the same with Nikon too

Hi there what sort of money are the second hand 5541LS going for ?
Thanks Rob

One I know of is VGC at £600 for the tripod, think they are about 850 quid new. Have attached a picture, looks to be in fine condition, but can only see a photo same as you

Please note mods, this isn't mine or in anyway connected, just trying to help out
