I have two 6 month old twin babies to shoot next week, not done any baby shots before and just wondered if their is anything i should specifically know, it's not just a lighting question to be honest but doing baby shots in general, i have plenty of lights to use, i also have a 8x7 Hilite although that seems like over kill for such small subjects, so i'm hoping to pick up the small size one before next week, or if anyone has any tips on using a smaller type background please post, thanks in advance :)

What do the parents require, have you asked them? If they are after high key then the hilite isn't overkill. I alway make a point of discussing the needs of my clients prior so I can set the studio up accordingly.

If you plan to shoot more babies get some bumbo seats, worth their weight in gold, as makes them sit upright or some small garden truggs are great. A large duvet folded over, so nice and soft and white muslin over the top works great, sheep skin rugs with babies peering over work wonderfully when done high key and converted to black and white.

I have shot twin babies before and find that they constantly hold hands and the bond is amazing, look out for that and get some close ups of it.

Good luck, I love working with babies and find it so rewarding. I have a newborn in at the weekend.

Thanks Adam, yes have discussed some ideas with the parents, sorry when i said overkill on the Hilite i was referring to the size of the one i have for such small subjects hence mentioning getting the smaller version :) are the garden truggs you mention those large type bucket containers with handles on the side, if so they may well make a great prop to sit the babies in, if you have any photos with that sort of thing i would love to see them posted here.

Lying on front looking up is a good one too.

Also had that idea in mind :)

Tel,

Yes garden truggs, you can get small ones and they come in a variety of vivid colours, ideal for babies but saying that I don't have any yet, but will be offering baby coffee morning shots soon.

I have bumbo seats and they are worth every penny, pick them up on ebay for roughly £20.
