:help:Hi all I was looking to increase my camera bag by buying a sigma 300mm lens for my nikon D40, when I bought the camera I was advised to buy the HSM lenses(which I believe stands for high speed motor:thinking:) but can't really afford to spend that much at the minute and was wondering is the normal sigma 300 just as good.
My main use would be for athletics photos in track and field and cross country.
any advice welcomed
thanks:)

Is it this you're looking at? That's a seriously pricey piece of glass!! Good though.

Have you considered this instead? It has the length and is just a bit slower aperture-wise.

thanks daftbugga for putting me right on the HSM issue as you can gather I am new here and still learning

simply put if it isnt HSM then it will not autofocus on a D40, and you will have to focuse everything manually. whether that is a feasible option for you, well only you can answer that. Try putting whatever lenses you have on manual focus mode for a few days and seeing how it feels

Hi specialman as a beginner to photography dont know much still learning looked at both your links and neither where what I was looking for both to pricey for me what I was looking for is a 70-300 lens which is quite a lot cheaper but from what daftbugga said wuold I be right in thinking it still needs the HSM for auto focus purposes

thanks Bolerus for that I will give it a go and see how I get on

You could look at the Nikon 70-300VR zoom which is an AF-S lens so will auto focus on your body.

They come in under £300.00 nowadays.
