Hi,

I'm looking at buying a new canon f2.8 L series lens but am unsure as to what mm i should buy. I want to shoot studio and outdoor fashion photography doing medium shots and head to toe shots, like the images attached. Can you please offer me some advice on which mm lens would be the best.

What gear do you have at the moment? And why do you feel you want a "2.8 L lens" if you don't know what focal length you want?

Random guess, I'd say most of them were taken between about 35mm and 150mm, which is a pretty big range.

You could use a 24-70 to take shots like that. You could also use a 70-200. Or you could use a lot of other lenses as well.

Look at what you're using now, and what it's not allowing you to do. Then think about what you want to buy.

at the moment im only using a kit lens which i find to be pretty crappy.
i have been told by fashion photographers how amazing these L series are. i do what to use wide angle but do not want to destort the images. i also need to take in considerating the length of my studio set up space which is about 7 - 8m long....

You haven't mentioned your body. I assume it's a crop body rather than full frame?

In the space you have, with a crop body you're best best is to buy a 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM. It's not an L, but don't be hooked on that cos the IQ is as good as an L. There are many lenses out their that're as good or better optically than some L glass. You're paying for build quality as well as optical quality with an L.

All advice is greatly appreciated, thank you.

So which lens would be the best to achieve images similar the ones above. Outdoor space would be unlimited but studio space only 7 or 8m in length. The EF 24-70mm f/2.8L or the EF-S 17–55mm f/2.8 IS USM?

If your heart is set on an L zoom lens you'll lose the wide end but as you have a kit zoom you can easily check to see if you can fit everything in by setting it at 24mm.

My usual question is why go for an L lens and not what offers you the best solution and quality regardless of L designartion or manufacturer but if your heart is set on an L zoom then go for it.

My heart is not completely set on L series. I am pretty open about which lens to get. I do want the best one for shooting images similar the pictures above, shooting in a 7m length space. Do you recommend going with the 17-55mm? Is that the best option?

you have limited space and an effective range of 27-88mm with the 17-55mm on a crop. If you had all the space in the world the 24-70 would be great, but you don't.

Those images above could be shot on any decent lens. The Tamron 17-50 f/2.8, for example.

Apparently the 17-55 f2.8 IS has L glass but is not given the L badge as it is for cropped sensor cameras. The IQ is superb but was too expensive for me when i was after that type of lens. I have a Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 which is really nice but has no IS. At this focal length it shouldn't make much difference but IS would be nice!
