Hi all,

I'm looking for a decent s/h flash for my Nikon d90.

I've seen a few SB800's on the secondhand market and was wondering if these are fully compatible with the D90.

I downloaded a manual for the SB800 and it lists other cameras for compatibilty but not the D90, although in this and other forums people have said about this flash for the D90.

Any advice would be appreciated as I'm now confused

Many Thanks
Paul

the sb-800 will work fine on your d90. The camera is alot newer then the sb-800 though and while it has not effect on functionality it does mean the manual for the sb-800 was printed a while before the d90 exisited

The flashgun will work fine on your camera. I've just gotten two in fact. You can use the D90 flash as commander to trigger the flash wireless. The sb800 can also be used as master to trigger another flash which is compatible to nikon cls ie sb600.

I have the SB600 which ie great on the D90, so the SB800 will be even better.

Thanks for all your speedy replies,

Looks like the SB800 it is then!

Just hope I'm doing right thing starting off with s/h one though.

Thanks again.

Unless you're getting one at a really good price I'd suggest keeping your eyes peeled for a secondhand SB900, it's a much better flashgun and can often be found for only £20 or so more than the much-older SB800.

I'll second the comments made above but don't discount the SB600 - this is a perfectly good flash and completely compatable with the D90 ... and cheaper than the SB800/900 :)

Really? What makes it better? I have both a SB-600 and SB-800 for my D90, and they both seem fine, albeit the SB-800 seems to have a better interface... What makes the SB-900 better?

improved user interface, more flash power, better battery life & no need for the fast recycle pack...............

The SB900 has a much more user-friendly interface than the SB800, much quicker recycle time, better zoom range, updateable firmware, adjustable flash patterns, etc, etc....

to the op all nikon flashguns are backwards/forwards compatable so will work fine

I have the 600 and think it's the bees knees! Really good...
If you get the 800 it'll be amazing, but as said, maybe the 600 could be just the job for you?!

Have a look at the Metz 48,Its been built with a usb port in it so you can download firmwere to upgrade and is in Bristol cameras for £159 or even the Metz 58 a little more expensive. You can still use Nikons creative light system with it and it works well with my D 80.The Metz 58 is £275

the SB-800 seems to have a better interface...
*giggle*

What makes the SB-900 better?
The flash head zooms to 200mm for a bit more punch, it recycles with 4 batteries almost as fast as the SB-800 does with the 5th battery added, and it fixes the hideous user interface on the SB-800, and a bunch of other features that I don't believe are on the SB-800.

Since getting SB-900s, my SB-600 has barely left the bag, and the SB-800 interface is too much of a pain in the arse for me to want to deal with.

From what I've seen the S/H SB800s are holding there price well and with a bit of hunting around you might be able to find a new SB900 for not that much more.

The only real reasons the SB-800s are holding their price are the 5th battery (which gives about a .3 second faster recycle time - assuming you're not using a proper external 8xAA battery pack), people don't know you can't turn the overheating alarm off, and they're slightly smaller so they weigh a bit less and take up a little less room in your bags.

The overheating alarm, btw, just tells you when your flash has reached a particular temperature, that it might start to overheat if you keep going at it, and requests you give it time to cool down. It doesn't mean your flash HAS overheated, and it can be disabled.

The SB-900 has no more overheating issues than the SB-800, except that the SB-800 isn't considerate enough to let you know when it's being hammered, so it could just go boom with no warning (unlikely, but possible, with either flash unit). :)

imo, all the nikon SBx00 are good for your D90. They're best for their prices.
The larger the x is, the more expensive, more powerful it is, just go for what you need, you will be satisfied :D

personally I like my SB400 the most, it's the cheapest and just fits my need :)

Thanks to you all who answered my question about the sb800.

All advice has been greatfully received and appreciated.

I'm sure I'll be asking more questions about to use a flash when I get one!!

Thanks
PAUL
