Hi

I'm thinking about getting some filters I've only got an Fuji S5800 but apparently I can get 46mm to 52mm step up ring also was going to get a lens hood also

I not sure would the filter screw into the step up ring then the lens hood screw to that

Also if I decided to get a Kood A filter kit I presume you cant fit a lens hood

Sorry if its a daft question only a beginner so trying to learn

thanks Jack:thumbs:

You can get step up and step down rings from most sizes to most sizes so that shouldn't be a problem.

As for the hood, that depends on where YOUR hood attaches. Does your hood attach to the screw? If it attaches to the outside of the end of the lens then the step up would be irrelevant (unless it steps up so much that it interferes physically with the hood).

The step up ring will screw on to your lens and effectively make it a 52mm. Therefore any lens cap would then have to be 52mm (when you have your filter in place) rather than your 46mm. Unless of course you remove the filter and step up as one part every time.

If you get a Kood or Cokin filter system then you would fit this for the relevant shots and then remove it for other shots. You can get hoods that attach to the filter system but I haven't seen the point myself!

Thanks mate

I haven't got a lens hood yet do you think its worthwhile? I was looking at getting cpl, grad, nd4 and nd8 filters think that should do for starters

That selection sounds like a good investment.

A hood is useful to avoid stray light. If you are going down the route of buying a 52mm step up (which would be sensible because if you upgrade later then that is a likely size filter for your new lens and will avoid having to buy everything again) you could buy a hood that screws into the filter ring such as this one:

here is the hood for about £4

here is the adapter for about £5
