A family member is looking for duplicate old photos
They are of odd sizes not like standard 6x4
Most black and white, obviously being so old not as sharp

What's the best and easiest way?

Scan ourselves at likes of Jessore, boots or use a service of some sort?

Best would be to get it to disc so I can load to Internet and share links

That very much depends on what sort of quality you would like the scanned files to be (sharpening the images can be done in the scanner or in PP), if you scan the images yourself and find that the quality is okay for your use then that's fine but if you find that the scanned images are not a high enough quality then take then to a shop that specialises in photography and ask for them to be scanned - if they cannot do it themselves then they can direct you to an establishment that has a good reputation for the service.

I'd seriously recommend going the professional route, the quality of their output is an awful lot better than the scanner output that I've seen from 'consumer' grade stuff!

I put a couple of my Dad's WW2 photos through my old Epson flatbed scanner and printed fairly decent A4 pictures off some of them with a little post processing. The originals were small (about 6 x 4.5 cm) due to wartime restrictions.
If you don't have a scanner then get it done professionally - but make certain they give you high resolution scans.

I hope you have appropriate permission from the copyright holder :) ;)

I have done a couple of these for my wifes family after their mum passed away and they all wanted copies of the sane photo from 50yrs ago and maybe.
I took a photograph of the photograph and then with some PP had a great result. I could also in PP extend or crop the image to suit todays more common sizes for framing

I've been photographing some of my old family photos from 40-60 years ago, the problem is that whilst they don't look too bad at 3.25" x 2.25" make them much larger and the flaws in the technology available to amateurs start to show, not including the photographers competance! Still makes for a nice family record though.

thanks all

without access to scanner at home we popped to jessops. apparently 95pence per scan!
so walked away and into boots. £2 on disc for up to 200 pics

will put some results up if able when we pick up tomorrow
