Hello,
I am after some advice. I want to get back into photography and I want to upgrade what I've got. I have a Canon Eos 600d but I've never been totally happy with it principly because of the menu system and layout. I'm not a total amateur but still got a lot to learn. I shoot mainly railway and landscape shots. So good low night performance without a flash is a must as it a good short lens. Two cameras I've been looking at are the Olympus EPL7 with the 14-28 mm lens and the Nikon D5200 with the 18-55mm VR lens. I have looked at both cameras in Jessops and I like both slightly leaning towards the Olympus. But what I don't understand is how the lenses compare for focal length. I want a nice short lens.
Can anyone offer any advice. It's much appreciated.

Thank you.
Mark.

So does the canon take good images? What lens or lenses do you already own with this body?
The Olympus is a 4/3rds system so 14-42mm lens equates to 28-84mm lens 35mm format
The Nikon a 1.5x crop system so 18-55mm lens equates to 24(27)-82.5mm lens 35mm format
Neither lens is quick for low light performance, personally if I only had to choose between the Nikon or the Olympus, I would pick the Nikon, why, better camera, but actually wouldn't choose either, there are some better options out there

18mm equates to 27mm not 24 with the Nikon.

Is a viewfinder a requirement or not? Both kit lenses will do the job, but there are lots better available. How wide do you want? Neither kit kens is particularly wide. What is your budget? Are you wanting a lightweight kit or is size not an issue? Are you using a tripod etc.

Been seen numbers all day, got a bit number blind :) 18+9 does = 27 ;)

Thanks for the advice. I have to admit I've been struggling to understandis the lens crop. Thanks for explaining it. My budget is fairly limited I've only got about £500 to spend. I tend to the viewfinder but only because the live view is slow. Not having a viewfinder is a slight concern for those rare days we have a bright sunny day. For some of my railway shots I do use a tripod. I only have the standard 18-55mm IS lens and a 28-135mm IS lens.

Size isn't too important. I think it more important how is feels in hand.

Well neither camera you mentioned going to be much better than what you've got at the moment. What about buying a new lens(es) to replace your 18-55mm and 28-135mm.

Well in that case you need to go to your local camera shop and hold them. Both the Oly and Nikon are completely different cameras. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the iso performance from the Oly. But it does feel more like a compact camera than a dslr. (Obviously) The 18-55 kit lens will be slightly wider on the Nikon than the Canon as the crop factor is a bit smaller. Nothing major though.

Olys live view is superb. Maybe consider looking at something like the em10 if you want a view finder. Look at places like hdew for them.
