Hi All,

Just wondering if I can pick your lovely brains on a couple of calibration questions!?!

I'm in the process of calibrating my camera. I've downloaded the AcrCalibrator Photoshop script to automate the process of calibrating Adobe Camera Raw for my digital camera.

The next step is to photograph the 24-patch ColorChecker target and after loading the raw image into my computer, to run the script, to perform the calibration.

The thing is, in order to photograph the colour checker, I'm imagining the best thing to do is print it out - in which case, surely I need to calibrate my printer too??!!

My questions are:-

- am I right about the need to calibrate my printer and

- if so, how do I do that?

Can anyone help me out? I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks very much :)

Yes, you do need to calibrate your printer, or more accurately, the ink and media combination you are using (if you change inks or paper you need to recalibrate) so you will need a calibration system such as XRite's i1Photo Pro 2 that can calibrate and create custom printer ICC profiles. Without it, your print output is not accuate anyway, so your camera profile won't be either. Also, unless your monitor is calibrated as well, what you're seeing isn't accurate either.

Calibrating a camera is pretty pointless actually unless you are being very very critical for pre press proofing. Shoot in RAW and you can make any adjustments you need to colour so long as your monitor is calibrated.

I'd invest your time and money in ensuring your display is calibrated rather than the camera.

Hi Thanks very much, yes, I have used Pantone's Eye-One Display2 to calibrate my screen. It was suggested I buy it by a shop assistant, when I was even more out of my depth than I am now (!) and trying to get some editing done. I don't know if you know this device / software or what you think of it?? (It does show a printer as being one of the devices that it says you can profile in the options, so I guess I could use that if I wanted to?) It has seemed to do the job but I'm such a novice at colour management that I'm not sure if it's ok just to use this or if you (or anyone) might recommend a better tool for the job?

Thanks

Yes, you can profile print media with that device. Calibrating your monitor, and printer is really all you need to do.
