Beginner Advice on buying a Fuji X100!

Hi all,

New to this forum

I'm selling my Nikon D7000 due to not using it much these days. I find that it's just too bulky and weighty to carry with me most of the time....

As a result I've found myself missing photography which I used to love doing - the reason why I updated to a D7000....but these days with a 4 year old I find that I leave the bulk at home...which is a shame.

So I'm looking to replace it with a great compact. I've done some research and read reviews etc. and love the sound, look and results that the Fuji X100 gives. I mean some of the images look amazing! And it fulfils my smaller, lightweight requirement.

I also like the fact it is 35mm fixed lens as I'd like to improve my composition work and reckon this will help!

Question is, how would you rate this camera today? With it's updated V2.1 firmware I believe most, if not all, niggles, have been ironed out. From what I've read, most people reckon the upgrade to X100s isn't really worth the extra money - and indeed, some people reckon the older sensor actually gives better results - I'd guess the latter is a matter of personal preference (?) -

What do you think? Any experience with the X100? Is there anything new that betters it for about the same cost...you can pick a decent one up these days for around £350-£400 - saw a MINT black limited edition one for £500 (very tempted)!!! Would you go for the X100s even though it's a bit more, ~£550....

All comments appreicated....hopefully sell my camera this week and look to purchase next weekend - so looking forward to getting back into photography.

I still own my original mint Fuji X100, it was one of the first ones here in the UK. (Pre-Tsunami) and I just can't seem to part with it.
The original Fuji CMOS sensor does indeed produce some lovely files especially in JPEG and some do say the X-Trans sensors have been unable to reproduce the same type of files.
Fuji addressed most of the niggles and for what the X100 is, I'm happy with it and the firmware updates.
I would go for the X100s if you need slightly better AF performance, don't expect DSLR rivalling AF though otherwise you will be disappointed.
 
I had the X100 soon after it came out after selling my Leica X1. I had all the upgrades and loved the camera, but needed to sell it ( to pay part of an unexpected tax bill!)
I replaced it with the X100s, and after selling that a year or so later, I missed it and bought another. I prefer it to the original X100. I like the faster, more accurate AF and I also prefer the IQ.
I appreciate a lot of people still prefer the X100 though, it has character.
But, out of the 3 cameras I have mentioned here, my favourite images were taken with the Leica.

Having owned both, I'd definitely go for the X100s for its improved AF etc. Try downloading sample files from X100 and X100s and see which you prefer.
 
There is something really nice about the original X100, I still have mine and can't bear to part with it even though I have bought an X-E1, X-E2 and Canon 6D since!! Everytime I use it it just feels so right.

I agree the 35mm view is very nice and surprisingly adaptable, I managed to go on a holiday to the Isle of Mull, forgetting to pack in the car the bag with all my photographic stuff, and only had the X100 and one single charge of battery!! You should be able to get an original X100 for around £300 now, just make sure it's serial number 21xxxxx or later to avoid the sticky aperture blade issue.

Buy one, you'll have a lot of fun with it.
 
Got mine a few months back so that i could leave the heavy full frame dslr at home. X100 is great, does everything that i got it for and fits in a coat pocket If dont want to carry a bag.
 
I keep looking at the Fuji X100S refurb with code deal, i have had a few X series cameras in the past and i really liked the images they produced..
I already have some cash waiting for a OMD EM5 Mark II but im highly tempted to spend it on a X100S and save up again for the OMD lol :D

Also its £458.08 for the X100S refurb after using the code because of the postage added on

Hmmm....thanks everyone for your comments.

Very much in 2 minds at the moment which to go for. I've definitely decided I want either an X100 or X100s - just not sure which to go with.

It's a shame that Fuji don't have any refurbed X100's as if they did I think I'd probably go for that...perhaps!

It largely depends on how much I get for my D7000 - they go pretty cheap these days. I'm hoping for at least £300 as I'm selling it with a kit lens and memory card and it is in mint condition.

So, assuming I get that for it an X100 probably won't cost me anything and a refurbed X100s will cost me about £150 which isn't an issue to me.


Anyway, nice to have such a decision to make!! :D
 
I was looking for a camera for a family holiday in August as my D700 and 35/85 primes is not really easy to carry round when you have to keep an eye on the little ones etc. I had my heart set on a Nikon J1/2 or 3 as they are relatively cheap but it will tempt me to buy the various lenses etc, but I am now really swaying to an X100.

Has anyone used both?

Daryl, I have a J1 as well, but its IR converted, in comparison with an X100, I don't like the handling, too many functions buried in menus. I would take an X100 anytime
